A. FARROW, OF-v'GA-RROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
Letters Pa'zfcntllo. 75,707, dated January 28, 1868. I
urnovrunnr 1N eline-momes TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, A. FARROW, of Carrollton, in the county of (J'rreene, and State of Illinois, havemade certain new and useful Improvements in Gang-Ploughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being lia-d to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference m'arlred thereon.
The object of this invention is to construct a gang-plough in such a manner that the depth of furrow mayl be regulated at pleasure'by the driver, andv this he will de byv elevating or depressing theipointor toe of the machine at pleasure. 4
lhe plough-beams are attached vto the axle, by means of draught-links and olevises, and each of the beams has an independent lever for each of its ends, by means of which to apply to them-the requisite movement.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my' improved plough, I will proceed to describe its 'construction and operation.
. Figurel, or" the drawings, is a longitudinal sectional elevation oi' the improved machine.
Figure 2 is a plan of the'same. l
This machine, like all other gang-ploughs, has a frame, A, which is mounted on the Wheels Al and axle A?A On top of the frame A is the drivers seat S, upon which the operator rides and manages the whole machine rlhere are two plougli-bcams, B B, which are attached to theback side of the axle by means of clevises and links if: The links lil should be, say, threeror four inches long, more or less, so as to allow the front end of theA beani to be raised or lowered, as shown by the dotted lines `62 in iig. 1. In order Vto give to the ploughs BV an independent motion in avertical direction, so as to elevate or depress either the point orheel, as may be desired, each beam is provided with two levers C Cl, which may be operated so as to give the required elevation or depression or" either end. The leverv C isrfulcrumed to the side of the'frame A at a, and is connected with the bolt fr', which couples the clevis b with the link b1 by means oi' the link c. A tooth or rib, on the inside of the lever C, engages the cogged rack cl, affixed to the side ot" the frame A, and holds the said lever in any required l osition. The lever is allowed a sutlicient amount of lateral s rino to disenffaue it Jfrom its fastenin 'in the P a c c g ranke". When the lever C is raised up, as shown in full lines in iig. I, the front end of the beam and the point ofthe plough will be up, as shown in full lines; but when the lever is thrown, down, as indicated by dotted lines in the same figure, the front end of the beam and the plough-point will be made to assume the position indicated by dotted lines 62, alsoof tig. 1. The lever C1 is fulerained tothe frame A at x2, and it is connected byy means of thearms C2 and c2 with vthe sector C3. The periphery of this sector is eogged, and gears into the vertical rack C, the lower end of which is attached to the rear end of thc plough-beam B. The sector-journal c3 finds its bearing in the frame A, and the horizontal arm C5 carries a sheave orroller, c, that guides and steadies the upper ond of the rack C". A lug, c5, is aihxedto, the side of theframe A, so as to engage the teeth oi' the cogged rack c6 on the inside oi' the arm C2, as vshown best in hg. 2.V By this means the lever C1 is held forward or back-A ward in any requircdpcsitiom When thrown back, the lever, sector, andplough will appear as theyare shown by the full lines in hg. l; butwhen the lever is thrown forward, the parts will assume the positions ofthe dotted vlines c7. By this means the ploughs will be made to nssumeanyrequired position, and may beentirely raised out of the ground, or set so as to run more or less deep, as circumstances may require. The lever Cx is to be constructed in such a manner' as to allow it to spring laterally farenough to disengage the rack c6 from the lug e5, in the same manne'r that the 'lever C is disengaged from its fastenings. Both of the lever-handles are to be placed within easy reach from the drivers seat. Y
Having described my invention, what I claim, is
l. The combination and arrangement of the lever C, link e, and traction-connections b bl hor-ein shown and described. A f
2. I claim the lever C1, arm O2, sector C3, rack C4, and plough-beam B, whencombined and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand in presence oi` A. FARROW.
