PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE E. MARTIN, OF ATHENS, GEORGIA.
VEHICLE-'POLE SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 736,858, dated August 18, 1903. Application filed January 3l, 1903. Serial No. 141.350. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HORACE E. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Clarke and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Pole Sockets;- and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. Y
This invention relates to the sockets in which the draft-poles of vehicles are inserted;
and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the pole-socket. Fig. 2 is a front end View of the same.
A represents the hounds, having diverging portion a and parallel portions b.
B represents the futchel-bars, which are a little deeper than the hounds and which are arranged between their parallel portions I).
O is a brace which extends crosswse over the portions a. of the hounds and over the A said futchel-bars, between them, and secures them together. p
D isa rectangular metallic socket-let into the futchel-bars between the parts b of the hounds. This socket is of the same depth as heated and slipped over the hounds and futchel-bars, inclosing the front end of the socket and its flanges. When this band cools, it shrinks and secures the said parts very irmly together. The band E fits snugly around the said parts and has yielding` curved portions f on its under side, which prevent it from being too rigid and inelastic.
G is the draft-pole, which is inserted in the socket between the futchel-bars, and g is a pin which holds the said pole in place.
What I claimis- 1. The combination, with the hounds, and the Iutchelbars between the hounds; of a metallic pole socket 'inserted between the futchel-bars and provided with projecting langes, and a metallic band shrunk over the said hounds and futchel-bars and holding the said socket securely in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hounds, and the futchcl-bars between the hounds and deeper than the said hounds; of a rectangular metallic pole socket inserted between the futchel-bars and provided with flanges which project part way over the hounds, and a metallic band shrunk over the said hounds and futchel-bars vand holding the said socket securely in position, said band having yielding portions on one side,substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
g HORACE E. MARTIN.
