Be it known that I, MARY E. PIKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a garment hanger especially adapted for hanging skirts and to so construct the device that it will be simple, durable, andeconomic andadjustable lengthwise, whereby to accommodate itself to any sizeof waistband, and to provide a supporting device which will enable a number of skirts carried by such hangers to be hungin a closet in a small space.

A further purpose of the invention is to provide a skirt-hanger in which the suspension member is adjustable upon the body member, enabling a skirt to be perfectly balanced and to be hung straight `no matter how much heavier one portion of the skirt may be than the other. Y i s The 'invention consists` in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device and a skirt suspended therefrom. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on the lines 3 3 of Figs. 2 and 4, and Fig. f1 is a longitudinal' section taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

The body of the device` is made intwo sections arranged to slide one within the other,

whereby the body may be lengthened and shortened to accommodate the hanger to different waist-measurements of skirts. In detail one section of the body consists of two 12a and are secured to a guide-loop 16 at their inner ends. The guide-loop 16 slides upon the rods 10 and 11, while the opposing guideloop 13 slides upon the rods 14C and 15. It will thus be observed that the body of the device is telescopic and may be readily contracted or lengthened at will.

Womens skirts are frequently heavier at the back than at the front or the front may be heavier than the back or one side may be heavier than the other. Under such conditions when a hanger is used having the supporting hook or shank liXed to the central portion of the hanger the skirt carried by the hanger is nnequally supported, and it will naturally sag where the preponderance of weight exists. In order to overcome this `difficulty and to hold the skirt horizontally straight at the band under all conditions, I provide an equalizing-sleeve 17, adapted to slide upon the body of the device between the guide-loops 13 and 16. This equalizingsleeve is provided, preferably at its center, with opposing downwardly-extending side ears 18, together with a slot 19 between said ears,` andin said ears the ends of a rod 19a are supported. A cam-knuckle 20is mounted to turn withthe rod 19a, having such relation to the under face of the body of the device that when the elevated surface of the camknuckle is brought uppermost it will extend through the slot 19 and jam against the body andhold the equalizing-sleeve in adjusted position, as in use the said equalizing-.sleeve may'need to be locked centrally on the body or at a point at one or theA other side of the center of said body, as may be required to balance the skirt and hold its band in .a true horizontal position, as is shown in Fig. 1. When the depressed surface of the camknuckle 2O is opposite the slot 19, the equaliz'ing-sleeve 17 is free to slide on the body, and the said cam-knuckle is preferably operated by an attached or integral inger-pieee 21. It is obvious that the locking device above described serves the dual purpose of locking the equalizing-sleeve to the body and locking the sliding sections of the body in the position to which they may have been adjusted. i

The equalizing-sleeve 17 is provided with an upwardly extending centrally -located IOO shank 22, terminating at its outer end in a hook 23, which is preferably made to engage with a metallic traveler- 24 in the form of a staple, said traveler being secured tothe under'face of a shelf 25 of a closet, 'for example, whereby a number of skirts may be supported from the said traveler or elongated staple; but the garment-hanger may be suspended from an overhead or a side-supported hook of any marketable type, it' desired.

In placing the skirt A upon the hanger the ends ofthe waistband are connected and the band is laterally stretched and opposing fabric loops ormetal eyes secured to the band are received by the hook terminations l2 and 12 of the body.

I desire it to be understood that the body of the hanger may be made in one section of single or double construction and that the equalizing-sleeve may be made to slide from end to end of the said single section. Under this construction the same balancing result will be obtained, but the body will not be adjustable as to length. I'furthermore desire it to b'e understoodthat instead of the lever locking device illustrated a set-screw or its equivalent may be employed and that when the body is madein adjustable sections it may be telescopic.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A garment-hanger having a body constructed in slidably-connected sections, each section comprising a loop having parallel sides closed at one end and open at the other, one side of one of the loops being received between the two sides of the other loop, all the sides of said loops being disposed in a horizontal plane, the outer or closed ends of said loop-sections being bent downwardly substantially at right angles to the main portion of said section and formed into hooks at their extreme ends, an equalizing-sleeve mounted to slide upon the body, provided with an opening in one face, and a suspension member, and a locking device carried by the equalizing-sleeve, arranged to operate through the opening therein upon said body to clamp the sections of the loop between the sides of said body without imparting' any lateral strain upon said sections, for the purpose specilied.

2. A garment-hanger having a body constructed in slidably-connected sections each bent into a hook at its outer end, an equalizing-sleeve mounted to slide upon the body, provided with an opening in one face, and a suspension member, and a locking device carried by the equalizing-sleeve, arranged to operate through the opening therein upon said body, for the purpose specified.

3. A garment-hanger having a body constructed in slidably-connected sections, each section comprising a loop having parallel sides closed at one end and' open at the other, one side of each one of the loops being received between the sides of the other loop, the outer or closed portions of said loops being formed into hooks at their extreme ends, the open ends of said loops being each secured together by a transverse guide-loop through which the two sections of the cooperating loop pass, an equalizing-sleeve .mounted to slide upon the body, having an opening in its under face, a suspension member centrally attached to the upper face of the said sleeve, a cam-knuckle pivoted upon the equalizing-sleeve at the opening therein to clamp the sections of the loops between the sides of said body Without im parting lateral strain upon said parallel sec` tions, and a finger-piece for the cam-knuckle, substantially as described.
