UNITED STATES Patented August 1.1, 1903.
WVILLIAM G. SIRRINE, OF GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
COMBINED PAPER-WEIGHT AND PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,832, dated August 11, 1903.
Application filed December 6, 1902. Serial No. 134,180. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. SIRRINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paper-Weight and Pen-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in combined paper-weights and penholders, and is especially adapted for the reception of a fountain-pen wherein it is desirable that the barrel of the pen be held in a substantially vertical position with the pen-point uppermost to prevent leakage when not in use and to be always readily accessible to'the writer.
To more fully understand my invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, illustrating same, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my combined paper-weight and pen-holder. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section along the line A B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
My improved paperweight is circular in cross-section throughout its height and is provided with the enlarged base portion 0, having an upwardly-extending elongated portion D of gradually-reduced diameter, the exterior longitudinal surface of which is of concave conformation.
E is a central conical bore extending longitudinally through the paper-weight and tapering in a direction the reverse of the exterior concave surface. The said bore is of a sufficient diameter to receive the barrel of an ordinary fountain-pen and hold the same in a substantially vertical position, and the wall of the said central bore at the upper or enlarged end thereof curves outwardly and forms, with the concave exterior wall, the roll or rounded rim F, having the curved flaring mouth G. The central bore is larger at the top than at the bottom and is provided with the curved flaring mouth in order that the pen may readily be inserted in its support without any consequential loss of time on the part of the user. The conical shape of the bore makes my device adaptable for any size pen. The top of the bore being sufficiently large to admit any size of pen and at the same time being of less diameter at the base of the support than at the top will at some point be small enough to hold firmly the smallest size of pen, and even if the barrel of the pen is so small that the cap end rests upon the desk itself it is manifest that the barrel will be still held firmly in a substantially vertical position.
Thus it will be seen that I have invented and produced a simple, useful, and ornamental device or appurtenance for desks, tables, and the like comprisingasubstantial paperweight provided with means for supporting a fountain-pen in a vertical position penpoint uppermost to prevent leakage, from which the pen can be readily taken and returned without unnecessary loss of time, and where it may always be found in its proper position ready for use and not besmeared with ink, as is usually the case when the pen is left resting in a horizontal position.
Any one who has constant use for a fountain-pen on his desk will readily appreciate the advantages I claim.
It is obvious that I may close the lower or smaller end of the bore, if desired, and that my combined paper-weight and penholder may be made of any suitable weighty material, such as glass, metal, 850.; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A combined paper-weight and pen-support, comprising an enlarged base portion, an upwardly-extending elongated reduced portion, and a central vertical bore.
2. A combined paper-Weight and pen-support, comprising an enlarged base portion, an upwardly-extending elongated reduced portion, and a central vertical bore having an outwardly-flaring mouth.
3. A combined paper-weight and pen-support, comprising an enlarged base portion, an 5 upwardly-extending elongated reduced portion, and a vertical conical-shaped central bore provided at its upper or enlarged end with outwardly-curved walls forming a flar ing mouth.
4:. A combined paper-weight and pen-supto form a continuation of said exterior conport, comprising an enlarged circular base cave surface. :0 portion, an upwardly-extending gradually- In testimony whereof I affix my signature reduced elongated portion having its eXtein presence of two Witnesses. 5 rior surface of concave conformation and circular in cross-section, a central vertical con- Witnesses:

or enlarged end flaring outwardly and curved F. F. BEATTIE.
