To A LL wHoM I'r'MAYA CONCERN; Beit known that I, WILLIAM L. COLLAMOR, of .Werrem in the county of Bristol, and Stato of Rhode Island, have invented anew and improved Governor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact' description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to` make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spocilica-tiop'.
'.Elisnsention relates to a new and improved governor for steam-engines, and for other'purposos, where governors areusually employed. The invention consists ina novel combination of a supplementalweight to the-ordinary ball-governor, substantially as hereinafter .gully shown and described, whereby the governor is rendered far more sensitive thonet-present, and a material saving of steam 'and fuel e'eotod. YIn the aecompanying sheet of drawingsi Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 a horizontal section of the same taken in the line a: 2:, iig. `l.

A represents an ordinary bull-.governor constructed in th'e usual'mann'er, and having its collar. a, which rises and f nlls on the spindle b under the influence of the balls c, connected by a link, d, with clover, B, whehhas its fulcrum `ut e in an upright, f.' The fulcr'um'e is at one side of the centre of the lever B, andthe link dis attached to the end ofthe sh'ortztrm of -the'sametthe longvarm being provided with a segment-raelc,-G, which `gears into a pinion, D, on a horizontal shaft, E, the latter having its bearing inthe upper part of ae upright,
F. On this shaft Etuere are fitted tigo' arms G G, one near each end thereoi`,each arm having an ladjustable.
weight, H, upon it, as dlearly shown in both figures. The long arm of the lever B `is provided with arms g, which press against levers I, through the medium of which the steam-valvel is operated to admit more or less steam to the cylinder. When theengine inc reasesin speed, the balls cof thegovernor'ofcourse rise, and also the collar a, the latter drawing up the short arm 'of' t'he lever B, which causes the long arm to belforcei down,
and the rack (Lender this movement of the lever, turns the pinion D and raises the weights H,'the lever acting upon the leversI, and the latter actuating the valve, so as to reduce the supply of steam to the cylinder and; retard the speed of the engine. In cuse the speed of tho engin-ois retarded so as to run below the speed'f required, the collar a, as it fails, forces down the.short arm ofthe lever B, and the long arm consequently rises Y and the shaft E is turned, so that the weights H- on the arms G G fall, assisting the balls c of the governo-r. The weights II may be rendered more or less eilicient `by adjusting them further inor out on the arms (ai G,
-nnd said weights render the governor extremely sensitive, Aand causo. the engine to run much more uniformly,
than usual. This invention has been practically tested -on a.r Corliss engine, and operates perfectly.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the supplementahweights H and lever B with a. governor, substantially as herein specified.
WILLIAM L.' COLLAMORE.
