Description
T J. BURKE, 4OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
i Letters Patent No. 78,576, dated January 21, 1868'.
IMPROVED CONCRETE-BRICK PRESS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: V l Beit known that I, T. J'. BURKE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of-Illinois, have invented "n nseful'Improvement in Concrete-Brick Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whch Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my invention.
Figure 2, a top view of the same. A Myinvention relates to that class of machines which are designed to make concrete 'blocks or bricks, of
the required size,by hand-power; and. its nature, in part, consi-sts in the use of a substantial frame, inside'of which is arranged a pressing-box, cam-wheel, rack-standard, ratchet-lever, and such other mechanical appliances as will make brick more readily, and in a more convenient manner than other hand-machines now in use for a similar purpose.
In order to give a correct understanding ofmy invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give a detailed description.
A, fig. I, represents one side, and A A, fig. 2,' both sides of theA iron frame used in connection with vmy device. The sides are made to rest on an iron botto-m, Z, fig. 1, and are bolted together at E E E E, two flanges, Wrbeing used to hold the bottom in position and the ends of the pressing-box their tops. These ends are shown at B B in both figures, and are itted closely against sides A A, so as to, form a pressing-box, open at its bottonnand to be covered by a lid, I, jointed to frame A A at I". This lid can be thrown open, as seen at figJQ, for receiving concrete, and shut, as seen at fig. 1, when a. block is to be pressed; a lever-catch, H, jointed to frame A A, being used to hold said lid in place.
The pressing-apparatus is constructed as follows: Aeam-wheel, R, hasbearings passing through the frame A, and is arranged to be turned in either direction by means' of a lever, U J', fitted to work on the ends of said bearings, as seen at fig. 2; and a lever, K, fig. 1, is made with a circular bearing at its bottom to t the camwheel Il, and extend up to the under side o f the plunger D, at'thebottom ofthe pressing-box, for the purpose of forcing said plunger upward andcompressing the concrete therein. This plunger'D has two slides, Y, attached to it, (one on each side,) and arranged to ru n in guides,`X,'secured to both of the inner sides of the frame A A,`as seen at tig. 1, for the purpose of keeping its upper surface parallel with the under slide of the lid I. 'One or more rack-s, L, as seen by dotted lines, are made in the 4slides Y, and arranged to mesh in a. ratchet, M, rigidly attached to -a lever, N S, having 'a fulcrum-pin, P, plut through frame A A, in order that said lever may be used to force brick out of the box B B after the same has been compressed.
I use any suitable material for making my press, such as iron, steel, and wood, as the case may require.4 I, however, prefer iron, as being the cheapest for hand-presses, and fully answering the purpose.
Operation.
`In order to put the press in position foruse, the lever J should be raised up in a vertical position, asseen atfig. 1, after which the lid I should be thrown open, as seen at iig. 2; after which the box B B can be filled with concrete, andclosed by the lid'I, and secured by the lock I I, as seen at fig. 1. This being done, the lever lL should be brought to a horizontal position, as at fig. 2, which will compress the concrete in the box. The brick can be thrown out of the box B B after the lid I is raised, by forcing the lever N S downward to such'a point as will raise the follower D to the top of the box.
Havingvthus described my device, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The camwhccl R, in combination with lever J, follower D, slidesX X, lever N S, and box B B', arranged to operate in the manner as herein set forth.
T. J. BURKE.
