SAMUEL P. BUSH, OF COLUMBUS, .OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKEYE MAL- LEABLE IRON AND COUPLER COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BOLSTER FOR CARS AND CAR-TRUCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,814, dated July 28, 1903. A Application filed December 16, 1902. Serial No. 135,446. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. BUSH, a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters for Cars following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to animprovementin bolsters for cars and car-trucks, its object being to provide a cast-steel bolster constructsmall initial cost.
a View in side elevation.
' and strengthened by the longitudinal web5 With these ends in view the invention consists in cert-ain features of construction and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are transverse sections taken, respectively, on the lines a (1,?) b, and c o of Fig. 1.
One member or plate 1 is made straightor fiat throughout its length, while the other member or plate 3 is curved or inclined upwardly from its center hearing or hollow column 2 to its ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
At each end of the bolster the top and bottom members are united by the short side webs 6 6 and the centralwebs 5, the latter extending from end to end of the bolster, and depending flanges 11 are formed on the side edges of the top member 1 at the central portioniof the bolster and give additional strength thereto. 1
Thecenter column or pillar 2 is reinforced and atransverse web 8, which connect the top and bottom members and serve to strengthen. the central portion of the bolsterand its center bearing.
Abolster of the form and construction above described is adapted to be made of cast-steel and produced at a low initial cost. The disposition of the metal entering into its construction issnch as to produce a bolster of minimum weight and of great strength and stiffness to resist transverse shocks and Fig. 2 is a plan strains resulting from blows or shocks imparted to a car in the direction of its length.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is and Car-Trucks; and I do hereby declare the I 1. Acast-steel bolster consisting of top and bottom members having their ends connected by side and center webs, said bolster provided with vertical side flanges, all cast integral, substantially as set forth.
2. A cast-steel bolster comprising top and bottom members having side connecting-webs cast integral therewith on opposite sides at the ends only of the bolster.
3. A cast-steel bolster consisting of top and bottom members each having cast integral therewith a vertical web and vertical flanges on the side edges of the top member which extend along the central portion of the bolster, substantially as set forth.
at. A cast-steel bolster consisting of top and bottom members having their ends connected by side webs and a central web extending from end to end of the bolster and integral with the top and bottom members thereof.
5. In a bolster, the combination of a top member iianged down on each side for part of its length, a bottom member cast integral with the top member, the connections being at the center, at the ends, and at intermediate points, substantially as specified.
6. In a bolster, the combination of top and bottom members rectangular in section, having central and cross webs at the center, and central and side webs at the ends integral with said top and bottom members, said top and bottom members extending from end to end of the bolster, substantiallyas specified. o
7. In a bolster, the combination of top and bottom members rectangular in .section and having vertical flanges for part of theirlength, of central and cross webs at the center and central and side webs at the ends, all cast integral with the top and bottom members, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL P. BUSH.
