ARTHUR E. RIEDEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'S-NOW-.MELTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFIcAtrroiv forming part or Letters Patent No. '734,195,01ated July 21, 1903. Application filed January 27, 1903.` Serial No. 140,698. iNo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LARTHUR E. RIEDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SnowlMelting Apparatus, of which theV following is a specification, suchas will enable those skilled'in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved apparatus for melting snow, whereby accumulated snow'in the streets of cities and'towns may be more conveniently disposed of and at a less expense than is possi# ble by present methods.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciticration, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a snownnelting apparatus involving my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation thereof; `Fig. 3, a cross-section cnr-the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 a similar section on the line Ll 4 of Fig. l.
In the practice lof-,my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide. a truck-frame a,
which Vmay be Ofany suitable vor desirable construction and whichis provided at each end with .axles and wheels l); The truckframe d is preferably rectangular and oblong in formrand composed of side members 0,2, connected' by end members 0.3, and mounted over this frame is a supplemental frame c of the samevgeneral Aform and provided Vatfits rear end withva shaft c2, having bearings o3 on the main truck-frame. The main truckframe is also provided nearits front end with a transverse member a4, through which are passed vertically-arranged jack-screws d, and the supplemental frame c is provided with a cross member c4, on which said jack-screws bear, and by means of this construction the front end of Athe supplemental frame c may be raised or lowered Whenever desired. Arranged rearwardly ofthe front portion of the supplemental frame and at each side thereof are anged rollers e, said rollers being arranged in transverse pairs, and mounted on these roller-sis a cylindrical casing f, having annular tracks or ways g, which bear on the rollers e. AThe cylindrical casing fis also provided with an annular gear g2, and supported longitudinally of the supplemental frame and beneaththe same is a shaft 72, having a gear-wheel h2, which operates in connection with the annular gear g2, and the front end of this device is provided with a crank-wheel h3, and supported over said crank-Wheelv and over the front end of the supplemental -frame is a gasolene or other suitable motor h4, the piston of which is in operative connection with the crank-Wheel h3 by means of a rod h5.
Within the cylindrical -casing f and arranged concentrically with relation thereto is a supplemental cylindrical casing t', which is provided with longitudinal rows of perforations Q22, and within this supplemental cylindrical casinglt' and secured to the inner walls thereof are longitudinally-arranged stirrers j, perforated longitudinally, as shown at f, and the inner edges 0f which are preferably curved or bent at an angle to the body portion thereof, the curves or bends being.
preferably all in the same direction and being in the direction of the revolution of the casings f and t', and between the casings f and 1l is an annular space 7c.
At the front end of the casingfis placed a lire-box m, similar tothe lire-box of a boiler, and over this lire-box is placed a hopper m2, having a discharge-spout m3, which is directed downwardly and backwardly and adapted to discharge snow into the open front end of the supplemental inner casing t. It will be observed that both of the casings i andfare open at the'front ends and also at their rear ends, and the casing t' is preferably provided at its rear end with an inwardly-directed flange or rim i3, whereby a reduced opening 114 is formed, and, if desirable, an escape or draft iiue may be'placed seas to communicate with the open rear end of the `casing t'.
The lire-box m is provided in the form ofl construction shown and in one side with a door m4 and with the usual grate m5, and in practice a fire is started in the fire-box and the flame, the hot gases, and other escaping products of combustion pass backwardly through thecasing t' in the manner of an or- IOO dinary boiler, and said casing t is highly heated, together with the stirrers or agitators j. The snow is thrown into the hopper m2 and passes downwardly through the chute m3, which is also highly heated, and is discharged into the casing t', which is constantly revolved by means of the engine or motor h, and in this operation the snow is constantly lifted by the stirrers or agitators j and constantly dropped from a higher to a lower position and gradually moves backwardly to the rear end of the casing z', over the bottom of said easing, and along the stirrers or agitators j, and in this operation all the snow is quickly melted and the melted water tiows through the holes i2 in the casing i and into the outer casing f, which is also constantly revolved, and out at the rear end of said casing.
It will be apparent that the casing f and fire-box m may be rearranged, or, in other words, the fire-box may he put at the rear end of the casing f, in which event the rear end of said easing would be adapted to be raised and lowered, and any suitable fuel may be employed in the tire-box, and oilejector burners may be used, and Various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be iliade without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. It will also be apparent that my improved snow-melting apparatus may be conveniently moved from one point to another in the manner of an ordinary truck or portable engine, and my invention is not limited to the means herein described for rotating the casing f and the casingz' therein, and any suitable mechanism for this purpose may be employed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a snow-melting machine, a frame vercally movable at one end, a revoluble cylindrical casing mounted thereon, a supplemental casing supported concentrically Within the first-named casing and open at both ends, and a fire-box mounted on said frame at one end of said casings and adapted to discharge heat into the supplemental casing,`
