TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, J. B. GAYLE, of Raleigh, in the county of Wake, and in the State of North Carolina,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to, the letters of reference marked thereon.

In the annexed drawings, makin part of this specification, A represents an oil-can, made in general appearance similar to the can in ordinary use for oiling cars and machinery, &c. B'represents'the can-spout,

and O the handle. This handle is made hollow. D represents a rod, which is placed in the centre of.the 'can in a vertical position, with its lower end resting in a guide or sleeve, H. The upper end oftllis rod is made cone-shaped, and so that it wiil'fit and close, when desirable, a similarly-shaped orifice in the spout B. When the rod falls it opens, and when it rises it closes this orifice, so as to allow orcut-oif the flow of oil from the can. D represents a curved rod, which is secured at one end to rod D, and then passes up and out at the upper end of the handle 0. Surrounding this rod'at its outer end is a coiledwire spring, 2:, which keeps the rod pressed upward when pressure is not placed upon the head G of said rod; The rod maybe suitably packed inside of the handle toprevent the oil'from leaking or escaping around it. vThe packing arouudthe rod, as showuin the di-awings, causes the rod to act somewhat in the form of a pump, to pump the oil. The spring a: keeps the rod D lifted, so that its conical end keeps the orifice in the spout closed, so that oil cannot escape through the spout except when it is desirable. i p

- In using'this can, the operator takes the handle in his hand, andplaces his thumh'upon the head or cap G of rod D. When the nozzle or point ofthe spout is at the point where he wishes to deposit oil, hepresses upon the head G, so as to bear down therods D and D, causing. the conical end e to disclosethe orifice in'the spout, and thus allow oil to escape. As soon as he wishes to cut the oil off, he removes his thumb from the cap G, and the spring :2: raising the rods closes the orifice of the spout.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The rods D D, with 'the packing, as described and used with the can A and handle C, said rods being provided with cone-shaped top and coil spring z, respectively, and operated in the manner substantially as and for the purposes described.
