SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,757, dated March 24, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that-I, FRED SWALLOW, of Miami, Ottowa Nation, Indian Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in churns, its object being to provide one which is dasherless and performs the churning process by imparting to the milk an undulating or wave-like motion.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the brake device.
In the drawings;A represents a supporting base or frame composed of the open box-like structure mounted on legs or supports. At one end of the structure, at each side, are the uprights or standards B B. An internallytoothed drive-wheel O is journaled to the outside of one of the standards B. At or near the top of the said standard is mounted in suitable bearings a crank-shaft D, on one end of which is secured a pinion D, meshing with internal teeth of drive-wheel C. On the opposite end of the crank-shaft is mounted a balance-wheel D A handle 0 for operating the drive-wheel O is secured thereto, as shown.
Secured to the crank of the crank-shaft D is a connecting-rod or pitman E, the other end of which is connected to the upper end of a rocking lever F. The lower end of said lever F is forked at F F and spans the churnbody G, the lower ends of the fork member being slotted, as at f f, and is pivotally secured thereto at about its center by the cran kpins HH, passing through the slots f f. The churn-body is provided at one end with the gas-escape I, and secured to its lower surface is the rocker J, held to the base of the boxlike structure by a pin K, passing through a slot J in the rocker J. Said rocker works in a guide-plate L, secured to the box structure, said guide-plate being provided with the side flanges Z Z to prevent side motion of the rocker J.
A cross-beam T is secured between the uprights B B below the crank-shaft D, and secured to the cross-beam at its center is a spring-bar M, which extends forwardly and is pivotally connected to the forked rod Fjust above the fork members.
Secured between the uprights B, just above the cross-beam T, is a rod P, to the rear lower edge of which is hinged a curved spring-brake N, the front end of which bears upon the spring-bar M. A thumb-screw O is threaded through the hinged spring-brake N into the cross-rod P, whereby the tension of spring brake N may be regulated. This hinged brake bears on the bar'M with a cushioning effect and prevents undue jarring or jolting of the churn-body when in operation and in reversing its motion. To each end of the churn-body is secured the coiled relief-springs Q, the lower ends of which are connected to eyes R, secured in the end of projections S, extending outwardly from the base-board of the frame, and the upper edge of the projections Sis grooved, as at s, to allow play of the relief-springs Q and at the same time prevent side motion thereof and maintains the said relief-springs in their proper position.
One end of the churn-body G is provided 7 with the screw-cap G for filling and emptying the said churn-body, and said cap is provided with the handle G for attaching and detaching said screw-cap.
The purpose of the coiled springs Q is to relieve strain on the gearing.
The operation of 'the device is as follows: The churn G, which is dasherless, having .been filled with cream the drive-wheel O is rotated, transmitting motion to the crankshaft D, which reciprocates the pitman E and causes a rocking motion of the body G through the rocker J on the guide-plate L, the extent of the rocking being limited by the pin K working in the slot J, the gas escaping at intervals from the gas-vent I. The slots ff in the lower ends of the fork members F allow the crank-pins to move freely therein and prevent undue binding and friction at that point.

The curved spring N, which is hinged at its rear end to cross-rod P and bears at its front end upon the spring-bar M, acts as a brake thereon to prevent undue jarring or jolting, and its tension can be regulated by the set-screw O. A wave-like motion is given to the cream in the churn, and the cream is rapidly churned and converted into butter with a small expenditure of power.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a churn the combination of a churnbody provided with a rocker supported on a suitable base, a crank-shaft mounted on said base, a rocking lever forked at its lower end and pivotally secured to the churn-body, a pitman secured at one end to the crank-shaft and at its other end to the upper end of the rocking-lever, a spring-bar secured at one end to the frame and at its other end pivotally secured to the rocking lever above its fork members and means for rotating the crank-shaft whereby a reciprocal rocking motion is given the churn-body.
2. In a churn the combination of a base, a churn-body provided with a rocker mounted on said base,end uprights secured to the base, a crank-shaft journaled at or near the upper end of the uprights, a pitman secured to the crank of said shaft, a rocking lever secured at its upper end to the free end of the pitman, and having its lower end forked and pivotally secured to the churn-body, a springbar secured between the uprights at one end and pivoted at its free end to the rocking 1ever above the fork members thereof and forming a fulcrum for said lever, a spring-brake secured at one end between the end uprights, and adapted to hear at its free end on the spring-bar and means for rotating the crankshaft.
3. In a churn the combination with a base, of a churn-body provided with a rocker adapted to rest on said base, end uprights secured to the base, a crank-shaft journaled at or near the upper ends of the uprights, a rocking lever forked at its lower end and pivotally secured at said forked end to the churnbody, a spring-bar rigidly secured at one end between the end uprights and pivotally secured at its front end to the rocking lever above its fork members, a pitman secured at one end to the crank of the crank-shaft and at its free end to the upper end of the rocking lever, a cross-rod secured to the end uprights above the spring-bar which is attached at its front end to the rocking-lever, a curved spring hinged to the cross-rod and bearing at its free end upon the said spring-bar, and a set-screw threaded through the curved spring and into the cross-rod, whereby the tension of the said curved spring may be regulated.
4:. In a churn the combination with a suitable base, a plate provided with side flanges, secured to said base, a pin projecting upwardly from said plate, of a churn-body provided with a rocker said rocker having an elongated slot in its lower central portion, said rocker being adapted to be oscillated on said plate between the side flanges thereof, and have the pin project through said slot and limit the oscillation of the rocker, and means for impartinga rocking motion to the churn.
5. In a churn the combination with a suitable base, end uprights secured to the base, a crank-shaft journaled at or near the upper ends of said uprights, of a churn-body provided with a rocker adapted to oscillate on said base, crank-pins secured to the sides of the churn-body, a rocking lever the lower end of which is forked, the fork members of which are slotted at the lower ends and pivotally secured to thecrank-pins, a pitman secured at one end to the crank of the crankshaft and at its free end to the upper end of the rocking lever, a spring-bar rigidly secured at one end between the end uprights and at its free end pivotally secured to the rocking lever above the fork members thereof, an adjustable curved spring hinged at one end to a cross-rod secured to the end uprights and bearing at its free end upon the spring-bar, coiled tension-springs secured at each end of the churn-body and to the base, and means for imparting a'rotary motion to the crank-shaft whereby the churn-body is given a rocking motion.
