No. 722,374. PATENTED MAR. 10, 1903.
G. E. MILLER. I
BRACKET SCALE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 19, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. MILLER, OF ARLINGTON PLACE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ROBERT L. SCOTT, OF ARLINGTON PLACE, CALIFORNIA.
BRACKET-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,374, dated March 10, 1903- Application filed April 19,1902. Se ial N 103,807. (No model.)
T0 to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ariington Place, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Bracket-Scale, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bracket-scales.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of scales and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one adapted to be readily hung on a barrel or other support and designed for weighing small quantities of grain, crackers, and other goods usually stored in barrels and capable of being compactly folded when not in use and of supporting a bag or sack in position for receiving the goods to be weighed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bracket-scale constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the inner and outer frames.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an outer rectangular frame, provided at its top with supporting-hooks 2 and adapted to be hung on a barrel or support and having rearwardly-extending projections 3 at its bottom to engage the barrel or other support and offset the scale therefrom to prevent the inner vertically-movable frame from coming in contact with the bar- 'rel, which might interfere with the accuracy of the weighing operation. The outer rectangular frame is provided with vertical guiderods 4, connecting the top and bottom pieces 5 and 6 and located at the sides of the scale.
The vertically-movable inner frame, which is approximately rectangular, is composed of side bars 7, top and bottom cross-bars 8 and 9, a central vertical bar 10, and inclined braces 11, connecting the upper portion of the cenbars 7.
tral bar with the upper portions of the side The central vertical bar of the inner frame is provided at its top with an eye and is connected by a link or other suitable deper end of the spring is secured to the top of the casing.
The horizontal cross-bars of the verticallymovable frame are provided with bearings 13, arranged on the vertical guides 42 and provided with balls 14, which are secured in the bearings by rings 15. The balls are arranged in suitable races, and the rings, which are fianged, are threaded to engage interior screwthreads of the bearings. The bearings are provided with threaded sockets 16 to receive the ends of the rods 8 and 9, which are threaded. The upper ends of the side bars of the vertically-movable frame are extended beyond the braces 11 and are provided with indicators or pointers 17, extending laterally from the side bars and arranged to move over graduations of the upper portion of the guides 4:.
The vertically-movable frame carries a horizontal platform 18, connected at its inner or rear edge with the bottom of the frame by hinges 19 and abutting against the said inner frame, whereby it is supported in ahorizontal position; but any other suitable supporting devices may be employed. The plat- 8 5 form, which is adapted to receive a bag or sack, is capable of folding against the movable frame, and it is retained in its folded position by a hook 20, secured to the central vertical bar of the vertically-movable frame 0 and constructed of resilient material. The bag or sack is supported on the platform by a hinged rectangular frame 21, connected at its back with the vertically-movable frame at a point between the platform and the hook. 5
This rectangular bag-holder or frame, which is adapted to fold against the verticallymovable frame, is retained in its folded position by the platform, which abuts against the lower portion of the said frame or bag-holder mo 21 when the latter is folded. The hinged bagholder or frame 21 is provided with suitable shoulders or stops 22 for engaging the back of the scale to retain it in a horizontal position. These shoulders abut against the side bars 7, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the accompanyingdrawings; butanyothersuitablemeans may be employed for supporting the frame or bag-holder in a horizontal position.
It will be seen that the scale is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that itis adapted to be readily hung on a barrel or other support, and that the platform and the bag-holding frame may be readily arranged in a position for receiving a bag or sack for the reception of the goods to be weighed.
What I claim is- 1. A scale comprising a supporting-frame, a vertically-movable frame guided on the supporting-frame, a platform hinged to the vertically-movable frame and arranged to fold against the same, a bag-holder also hinged to the vertically-movable frame and adapted to fold thereon, and a spring connecting the frames, substantially as described.
2. A scale comprising an outer frame provided with graduations, a vertically-movable frame guided on the outer frame and located within the same and having a pointer or indicator to move over the said graduations, a hinged platform mounted on the verticallymovable frame, and a hinged bag-holder carried by the vertically-movable frame and located above the platform, substantially as described.
3. A scale comprising a vertically-movable frame, a spring connected therewith, a platform carried by the vertically-movable frame and hinged to the same, a bag-holder hinged to the frame at a point above the platform, and a catch mounted on the vertically-movable frame and arranged to engage the platform and adapted to hold the same and the bag-holder in their folded positions, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein the presence of two Witnesses.
' GEORGE E. MILLER.
