UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN J. MUSSELMAN, OF WICHITA, KANSAS.
GAM E APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,241, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed July 2. 1902. Serial No. 114,140. (N0 mOdel-l To all wiz/0m, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN J. MUSSELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved game apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the partitions.
4 represents the base of my game apparatus, which is shown as rectangular, said base being surrounded by skirting-boards 5, which project a suitable distance above the surface of the base-board, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 are a series of partitions arranged parallel with each other transverse of the base-board, the top of each of said partitions being different in outline, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The top of each of the partitions is provided with a groove or runway l5, while in the highest point of each partition a pocket 16 is formed, with which the grooves 15 communicate. At the end of each partition, directly in line with the center of the groove 15, is positioned a pin or stop 17, which serves to prevent a ball 18 from accidentally rolling out of said groove.
It is obvious that the general shape of the board, as well as the partitions, may be changed to suit the taste of the designer or manufacturer without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The object of my invention is to provide a game apparatus as just above described which may be used for playing a game similar to the well-known game of golf by two or more persons, the contestants sitting opposite. One player places his ball 18 against the pin 17 at the end of the groove or runway in the partition 6 and thumps the ball in the eort to make the same stop in the notch or hole 16 in the center of the partition. This play is repeated until the player has holed in. Then the opponent tries to make the same hole from his side in a less number of strokes. The player winning the hole takes his first stroke for the notch or pocket in partition 7, and so on throughout the series of partitions until the game is finished. The ball, as stated, is to be shot from the pin at the end of the groove.
It will be noticed that the groove on each side of the pocket 16 in a given partition is identical in contour with the groove in the other side.
Having'thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina game apparatus, the combination with a base, surrounded by a raised edge, of a series of elevations arranged transversely of the base, each of which is provided with a groove and a pocket in its upper edge.
2. In a game apparatus, the combination with a base having raised edges, of a series of partitions transversely arranged on said base, grooves and pockets with which said grooves communicate, formed in the top of said partition.
3. In a game apparatus, the combination with the base, of a series of partitions of varying contour, arranged transversely upon said base, and grooves and a pocket formed in the top of each of said partitions.
4.. In a game apparatus, the combination with a base, a skirting-board secured upon and projecting above said base, grooves and a pocket formed in the upper edge of each of said partitions, and a pin secured at the end of each partition across said grooves.
5. In a game apparatus, the combination with a base, a skirting-board arranged around and projecting above said base, of a series of partitions arranged parallel with each other, and transverse of the base, pockets formed in the center of the top edge of each of said partitions, grooves extending from said pockets to each end of the partition, at the same angle in each partition, and a pin or stop positioned at the end of each of said grooves.
The foregoing specification signed this 21st day of June, 1902.
.ALVIN J. MUSSELMAN.
