SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,183, dated. March 3, 1903. Application filed December 4, 1901. Serial No- 84,652. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM MUNDT, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding-Machines for Millinery-Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in braiding-machines for making fiat IO braided millinery trimmings formed of a number of flat individual bands which heretofore had to be braided by hand, for the reason that there was no braiding-machine in the market for this work; and for this pur- I5 pose the invention consists of a machine for braiding millinery trimmings which comprises a top plate having the usual serpentine track having stationary abutments suitably arranged along the same, spool-holders each provided with a base-plate,circumferentiallynotched disks secured below said base-plates, means on said disks for engaging said stationary abutments, traveling base-pieces for said spool-holders, means for connecting said spool-holders and base-pieces to permit radial turning of said spool-holders, and spring-actuated stop devices suitably arranged to engage the notches of said disks, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of one form of millinery-trimming braided on my improved braiding-machine. Fig. 2 is a top view of the braiding-machine, showing the serpentine track of the same, together with the stop de vices for turning the spool-holders, and two spool-holders arranged on said track. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section of my improved 4o braiding-machine on line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing one of the stationary stops for reversing the spools. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the spool-holders used in my improved braiding-machine. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5, Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line 6 6, Fig. 4, drawn on a larger scale, showing the locking device for the spindle of my improved spool holder. Figs. 7 and S are respectively a front and a side elevation of a modified construction of spool-holder, showing the spool arranged in vertical position. Referring to the drawings, A represents the top plate of my improved braiding-machine, which is provided with the usual serpentine slot or track a, that is formed by suitablyconnected curved openings in the top plate and cam-shaped plates a in said openings, that are supported by posts a on the bottom plate of the machine, said cam-shaped plates .being smaller than the openings in the top plate, but corresponding in shape therewith, so as to form therequired width of track between the edges of the openings and plates a. At the reversing ends of the serpentine track a are arranged two stationary stops or abutments 1) b, which are beveled on that side fac- 8o ing in the direction of motion of the spoolholders 0. These stops serve for the purpose of radially-turning thespool-holders as they form contact with the abutments. Additional abutments b b may be arranged at intermediate points and opposite sides of the track in case such should be required for turning the spool-holders before they arrive at the reversing ends of the track and pr0- ducing the proper braiding of the individual 0 ribbons, cords, or other parts of the same. The traveling spool-holders O are shown in Figs. 4 to 12 and consist each of a spool D for the band or ribbon to be braided, a spindle D for the spool, and a tension device E for the band or ribbon, said spindle being either supported in horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, or in vertical position, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The spool D is placed loosely on the spindle D, the latter being supported on standards I) of the base-plate D in such a manner as to be read- IOO ily removed and replaced thereon, said spool carrying at one end a ratchet-wheel d, which is engaged by a gravity-pawl d, that is pivoted to astationary arm d arranged on the stand D sidewise of the spool and connected by a pivot-rod d with theslotted upper end of an upright guide-box F, in which the tension device E for the ribbon, cord, or other braiding material on the spool is located.
In the modification, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, when the spool is supported on a vertical spindle theupper end of the spool is provided with raised ratchet-teeth d, which are engaged by the pawl d, that is pivoted to the upper end of an upright arm 61 the opposite end of the pawl being connected by the pivotrod d with the upper slotted end of the guidebox F. This arrangement'is well known and forms no part of my invention.
The shaft or spindle on which the spool D is supported can readily be removed from its horizontal stand D by releasing the retaining device d from the end of the spindle, so that the emptyspool can be removed and replaced by a full one. The guide-box F is provided at its upper end with a transverse rod g, over which the ribbon, braid, &c.,is guided, it being then passed downward and through an eye g at the upper end of the weight g of the tension device and then in upward direction through a slot in the cap F of the guidebox to the braiding throat or guide of the machine. weight g is connected by a helical spring g with the bottom of the guide-box F, as shown in Fig. 5. The connecting-rod d is bent into U shape at its upper end, the U-shaped end d being guided in slots d of the guide-box F and lifted by the tension-weight g whenever it is raised against the tension of its spring g so as to raise the pawl d and permit the turning of the spool and the feed of the band or ribbon on the spool in the wellknown manner. The cap F is hinged to the upper end of the guide-box and provided with a retaining device at its front end, so as to be held by friction on the upper end of the guide-box. The guide-box F is oblong in cross-section, the cap F being made corresponding in shape thereto. The cap F is provided with one or more guide-slots g for the band or hands wound on the spools D, as shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the band or bands passing upward to the braiding-throat from the caps F of the guide-boxes F. The baseplate D of each spool-holder O, on which plate the guide-box F is supported, is connected by four pins ff with a notched disk f, said disk being preferably provided with eight notches f which are arranged at equal distances from each other in the circumference and are engaged by tapering and springactuated stop devices f the shanks of which are guided in suitable keepers f that are located on the bottom plate. The stops f are preferably arranged diametrically to each other, so as to engage with two opposite The lower part of the tension-- notches of the disk f. The base-plate D and disk f are perforated and connected by a sleeve f that is placed on the hollow interiorly threaded socket f of the traveling base-piece D of the spool-holders, as shown in Figs. 4, 5,6, 7, and 8, and retained by a screw and washer f so that the spool-holder can turn on the base-piece D The basepiece D is provided with the usual top and bottom flanges or wings, so as to travel in the serpentine track of the top plate A. Whenever the connecting-pinsf between the baseplate D and the disk f of the spool-holder abut against one of the abutments b or b, that are arranged along the track, the spool-holder is turned radially on the spindle of its basepiece or shoe D so that the spring-actuated stops f are pushed back and released from the opposite notches of the disk f, so as to permit the shoes to engage the next adjacent diametrical pair of notches f. By this radially-turning motion-of the spool-holder the fiat ribbons, cords, or other braiding material delivered by the spool-holder to the braiding-point are always placed in such a relative position toward the braiding point or throat that the uniform braiding of the parts into a fiat millinery-braid is obtained. With ordinary braiding-threads this radial motion of the spool-holders would not be necessary, as
they can be twisted sufficiently, as required,
the reversing ends of the same, would impart a certain twist to the individual parts of the fiat bands or ribbons which would prevent the smooth braiding into a fiat braid or trimming. This objectionable twisting is pre vented by arranging a number of abutments alongside of the track at the reversing ends and intermediate parts of the same, so that thereby the individual bands or ribbons are always in a parallel or approximately parallel position with the braiding-throat, so that the braiding is accomplished in a regular and finished manner. Without the abutments and the radially-rotating spool-holders this would not be the case and the proper position would not be given to the individual bands or ribbons to be braided and a twisted and irregular braiding of the ribbons or other fiat braiding material would be the result. The radially-rotating spool-holders present thereby the ribbons in a flat position to the braiding-throat, for the reason that the slots in the caps of the guide-boxes are turned at the proper time with the spool-holders by the abutments and the stop mechanisms of the spool-holders, so that the proper relative position of the ribbons or other fiat braiding material toward the braiding-point is always kept up. By arranging these abutments at intermediate points on the right or left of the track any required position can be imparted to the outgoing slot of the caps of the spoolholders, so that the position of the braids delivered by the same is fully within control, and thereby any desired millinery-trimmings can be produced.
In some cases it is necessary to arrange the stop devices at greater distance from the track, so as to interfere in a less degree with the free motion of the spool-holders traveling in the track. In this case the vertical pins f, which connect the base-plate D of the spool-holder with the disks f, are dispensed with and in place thereof a solid cylindrical portion f substituted, as shown in Figs. 13 and 14. This cylindrical portion f is riveted or otherwise attached to the base-plate D and is provided with radial arms f that are inserted into sockets of the cylindrical portion, said radial arms being equidistant from each other and of sufficient length so as to form contact with the abutments b I), which are made of sufficient height so as to he in the path of the arms, as shown in Fig. 13. The contact of the arms f with the abutments b b produces the radial turning of the spool-holders on their base-pieces or shoes guided in the track until the next pair of notches f is engaged by the spring-actuated stop devices f which are arranged in the same manner as in the construction shown in Fig. 6, the lower part of the cylindrical portion f being provided with an enlarged disk f, having four pairs of notches f The construction shown in Figs. 13 and 14 is preferable when the abutments by which the spool-holders are turned on their axes from time to time so as to bring their ribbons into proper position toward the braiding-point are to be located farther from the track a and takes the place of the construction shown in Fig. 6.
By the radial adjustment of the spool-holders at the proper points alongside of the track the braiding-machine can be adapted for braiding flat bands or ribbons into fiat braids of all kinds, such as are used for millinery-trimmings, whereby the scope of the braiding-machine is considerably enlarged.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A braiding-machine, consisting of a top plate having a serpentine track, stationary abutments arranged at suitable points on said track, spool-holders provided each with a base-plate, traveling base-pieces or shoes guided in the serpentine track of the top plate, means for permitting said spool-holders to turn radially on said base-pieces, and spring-actuated stop devices on said basepieces for limiting the radial movement of said spool-holders relatively to the basepieces, substantially as set forth.
2. A braiding-machine, consisting of a top plate having a serpentine track, stationary abutments arranged at suitable points on said track, spoolholders, traveling basepieces or shoes guided in said track, pivotal connection between the spool-holders and base-pieces, circumferentially-notched disks secured to said spool-holders, means on said disks for engaging said stationary abutments, and spring-actuated stop devices for engaging said notched disks, substantially as set forth.
3. In a braiding-machine, the combination, with a top plate having a serpentine track, of stationary abutments arranged on said track, spool-holders each provided with a base-plate, circuinferentially-notched disks secured below said base-plates, pins on said disks for engaging with said stationary abutments, traveling base-pieces for said spoolholders, means for connecting said spoolholders and base-pieces to permit radial turning of the spool-holders, and spring-actuated stop devices suitably arranged to engage the notches of said disks, substantially as set forth.
