SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,138, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed September 25, 1902. Serial No. 124,833. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. PEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers.
The object of the invention is in a ready, simple,thoroughlyfeasible,and practical manner and without necessitating any radical change in the structural arrangement of trousers as now made to take up fullness around the waist, thus to cause them closely to fit the form of the wearer,and more especially to take up and retain such fullness at the sides or hip portions of the garment.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of waist-adjusting means for trousers, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied as to change, shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof, and in the drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective,taken from the rear, of a pair of trousers and exhibiting the waist-adjusting means of the present invention unfastened. Fig. 2 is a similar View exhibiting the waist-ad j usting means fastened to efl'ect tightening of the trousers around the waist of the wearer. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken through the waistband and waist-adjusting means.
The waist-adjusting means of the present invention comprises two straps or tightening members 1 and 2, the latter having secured to it the ordinary buckle 3. The member 1 is confined between the trousers and the waist-lining 4, preferably at a point below the waistband, and is secured to the trousers by the pocket-seam 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the free end of the member being projected through a slot 6 in the rear portion of the trousers.
The member2is confined fora portion of its length between the trousers and the waist-lining in the same manner as in member 1 and is secured to the trousers by the pocket-seam 7 and at this point projects through an opening in the waist-lining and extends inward to a pointadjacentto the fly edge 8,aline of stitches 9 serving to secure the free end to the Waistlining, thus to prevent it from dropping down. The free inner end of the member 2 is provided with hooks or catches 10 to engage eyes or loops 11, carried by the usual lappet or tongue 12, which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is shortened to present a sufficient width of goods to permit of the attachment of the eyes. The outer end of the member 2 projects through a slot 13 in the same manner as the outer end of the member 1. By having the point of attachment of the members to the trousers at the pocket-seam when draft is applied to the waist -adjusting members the trousers are drawn tightly over the hips and all fullness is disposed at the rear or seat portion of the trousers, so that the front thereof will be caused neatly to fit the wearer. By reason of the fact that the straps are incased for a major portion of their length between two plies of fabric-namely,between the waistband and waist-lining-when the straps are drawn taut the waistband is drawn tightly against the wearer,and thus neatly fits against the figure and avoids the formation of wrinkles. In addition to taking up any objectionable fullness in the waist of the trousers for the purpose defined the adjusting means also operates as a belt, which will enable the wearer to dispense with the employment of suspenders if he so desires. I
To apply the waist-adjusting members to a pair of trousers requires no change in the structural arrangement other than the provision of the slots or receiving-openin gs 6 and 13, respectively.
While the arrangement of this invention is exceedingly simple and readily'adaptable to use, it will be found highly advantageous of employment, especially in fitting ready-made garments to purchasers.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a pair of trousers, of Waist-adjusting means comprising members loosely disposed for a portion of their length between the outside material of the trousers-waist and the waist-lining, and having their outer portions projecting through openings in the outside material of the trousers-seat, one of the members terminating at and being secured in position by one pocketseam, and the other member being secured intermediate of its length by the other pocketseam and projecting inward to a point adjacent to the fly edge, the inner terminal being provided with fastening means to engage the lappet or tongue at the front of the trousers.
2. The combination with a pair of trousers, of waist-adjusting means comprising members loosely disposed for the major portion of theirlength between the waist-lining and outside material of the waist of the trousers and movable in openings provided in the outside material of the seat portion of the trousers, the inner terminal of one member terminating at and being secured to the trousers by the pocket'seam, and the inner terminal of the other member being projected to a point adjacent to the fly edge and having fastening means associated therewith, the intermediate portion of the latter member being associated with the trousers by the pocket-seam and by a line of stitches passing through the waist-lining.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
hi LEWIS A. X PEAK.
