UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. RICHARDS, OF WINSTED, CONNECTICUT.
PICTURE-NAIL.
.SEECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,464, dated February 24, 1303. Application filed May 31,1902. v Serial No. 109,773. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. RICHARDS, a resident of Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin picture-nails, the object of the invention being to provide an improved nail which will prevent possibility of the picture-wire slipping, and hence hold the picture'in a straight line, and, further, to provide a nail of neat and ornamental appearance, as well as cheap to manufacture.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Figs. 2 and 2 are views in section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modified form of my invention.
1 represents a wire nail pointed at one end and upset at its other end to form a semispherical head 2. Around the nail and against the head 2 a coil of twisted wire 3 is tightly clamped. The coil comprises two wires twisted together and preferably plated or colored for ornamentation.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 I have inserted on the nail between the coil 3 and head 2 a hollow ornamental shell 4, made in two sections clamped together, and a great many other forms of ornamentation may be provided.
By employing my improvements the coil of twisted wire makes an irregular or clamping slot to receive the picture-wire and serves to clamp the wire and prevent its moving in either direction. The advantage of this is obvious for the reason that pictures are never balanced, one side or the other being the heavier, and the constant jarring of the house has the efiect of the heavier side pulling the wire over and the picture getting one-sided. With my improvements this is prevented, as the wire is tightly held in the irregular slot formed-by the twisted wire, and the coil further permits the wire to be held on the nail at any distance from the wall with no danger whatever of its changing its position.
A great many slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within THOMAS C. RICHARDS.
