ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. PLUE, OF RAINIER, OREGON.
MANUFACTURE OF DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 721,231, dated February 24, 1903.
Application filed October 31, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM D. PLUE,a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Rainier, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in theManufacture of Doors," of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin g drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of doors, more particularly screen-doors, the object being to facilitate the production of screen-doors and generally to make a better appearing and more serviceable door of this class and that at less cost than is possible by any of the methods which have come to my notice, and is designed to improve upon the invention set forth in my Letters Patent No. 617,120, dated January 3, 1899, in the application to screen-doors.
' To these ends myinvention consists in the combination, with the interfitting joints for uniting the various parts, of forming a molding along the inner edges of the several door stiles and rails, removing the same from the stock by specially-designed cutters in such a way as to provide rabbets for the reception of parts of said joints and the wire-screen edges, over the latter of which the said molding is replaced and nailed for covering-strips, that are even with or below the surface of the door.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a detail face View of a portion of the door embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line a; y of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively perspective views of door-rail end and the stock constructed according to my invention.
In the said drawings the letter a denotes the door-stiles, b the rails, and c the wire screens, which are inserted as panels in the door and secured in marginal rabbets d by means of covering strips or battens. of moldiug e, so laid that their outer surfaces will:
faces of the door. The several rails and stiles are united by longitudinal projecting tongues f on the former, which overlap the SerialNo. 129,541. (No model.)
adjacent rabbeted portion of'the stiles and the blind joints comprised ofcircular-shaped tenons g of the rails and correspondingshaped mortises h of the stiles, as set forth in my Letters Patent hereinbefore named, except that in theipresent applicationi. e., to screen-doors-I preferably make the tenons of size and shape to completely fill their respective mortises. The said molding-strips e are cut coincidently with and from the same stock as are the stiles and rails by the cutter-knives on the top sticker-head beading the same and removing the molding-strip from the stock by an incisive cut is from revolving knife-blades inserted transversely in a-specially-designed side cutter-head of the sticker or molding machine. Thus the stock from which the stiles and rails are cut is by the removal of the said molding-strip provided with the rabbet d of rectangular crosssection. The stock is now out into lengths for stiles and rails, in which are formed mortises or tenons, as required. The mortises are made by forcing'the stiles down upon a circularsaw, or vice versa, and the tenons and tongues in a tenoner and shaped to re-.
spectively register with the said mortises and theadjacent rabbeted portion of stile. This joint not only makes a strong connection between the parts, but it also provides large gluing-surfaces thereat. After the frame of the door has been glued and put together the screens are inserted and battened down along their margins by the aforesaid moldingstrips.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a door, with a rabbet upon the inner edge of a stile thereof and a blind mortise-joint comprising a circularbottomed mortise in the stile and a tenon on a rail registering with the said mortise, of a longitudinally-projecting'tongue on end of saidrail-adapted to overlap and be seated in v said rabbet, substantially as set forth. not project outside the corresponding sur- -2. Thecombination in a door, of rails and stiles, having rabbets extending along the inner edges the entire lengths thereof, blind mortise-joints comprising circular-bottomed mortises and corresponding tenons, a projecting tongue on each of the tenon ends of said rails or stiles adapted to overlap and be seated in said rabbets of the opposite parts, wire screens, and strips adapted to be batt-ened upon the edges of said screens within said rabbets, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
