IMPROVED RAILWAY-GHAIR.

'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY ooncnnm Be it known that-I, LnAN'nnn P'OLLOCK, of Ma-tteawnn, in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Railroad-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingmforming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent transverse sectional views of my invention. Figure 3 is a plan or top view'of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to a. new railroad-chair, which is so arranged that the heavier the rail is loaded, the tighter will it be held between the checks of the chair.

The invention consists in making the chair of two pieces, each piece consisting of one check andoi' a portion of the base. When the two pieces are connected, the base of one rests upon the base of the other,

the line of division between the two bases being inclined, so that as the rail presses upon the upper base it will tend to force the same downward on the incline, whereby the two cheeks would be brought towards each other.

A represents one portion, and B the other portion forming my improved railroad-chair. The portion A consists of one cheek, a, and oi the lower part, b, of the base of the chair. The surface of the base 6 is inclined towards the check a, so that the base b is thicker the further it is from the cheek a. The portion B of the chair consists of the opposite cheek c, and of the upper portion d of the base of the-chair. The under side of the base 01 is inclined, so as to make the base cl the thicker the Further it is from the check 0. When the two portions are placed together, the base 01 covers the base 6, and the edge of the base d rests against the check a, as shown. The tendency of the portion B of the chair would be, especially if it is weighted, to slide upon the inclined surface of the base 5 towards the check a, and, consequently, the two cheeks a and a constantly clamp the rail between them. The portion A of the chair is fastened to the sleeper by means ofspikes e, inserted through an outer portion of the check, or otherwise; and the portion B is fastened by means of spikes fitted through slots in the outer part of its cheek, and through the base 6 of the portion A into the sleeper. By means of these slots, the motion of the check '0 toward a is not prevented, while the outward or sideway motion of the portion '3 is hindered. Between the edge of the base-d and the cheek a may be interposed a layer, g, of rubber, leather, wood, or other elastic material, as indicated in fig. 2. Sand would thereby be prevented from filling the space, and from injuring the operation of the device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A railroad-chair, which is divided, by an inclined line drawn through the base, into two parts, A and B, each part carrying one of the cheeks, and all made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.

2. Int-erposing" an elastic plate, 9, between the edge .of the upper base d and the stationary cheek a, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
