Beit known that we, MAI-ILON PURDIN and GEORGE HENRY HAsKINs, citizens of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Printing Paper Bags and Wrapping-Paper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvement-s in devices whereby advertising matter may be printed upon each paper bag or sheet of wrapping-paper as it is withdrawn from its holder for use, the object ofthe invention being to simplify, cheapen, and entend` the usefulness of such apparatus.

With this object in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward particularly pointed out in the claim.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which this invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, having reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a bagholder for containing quantities of paper bags or sheets. of wrapping-paper of ve different sizes equipped with apparatus constructed in accordance with our invention for printing a card of corresponding size upon each bag or sheet withdrawn from the various compartments of the holder. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through one of the compartments of the holder and its printing mechanism. Fig.V 3 is a perspective sectional view of the printing apparatus on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of roller for use in the printing apparatus, adapted to contain movable or changeable type. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the same.

Like letters of reference indicate the same parts wherever they occur throughout the various figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A indicates the table or counter, upon which a bag or sheet holder B is secured by means of brackets B', there being one at each end of the holder, only one being shown in thedrawings. In the holder illustrated in Fig. l

-there are arranged five parallel compartments, one above the other, decreasing in size from the bottom to the top, intended to hold a quantity of iive sizes of bags or sheets O', C2, O3, O4, and O5. The rear of the holder is only partly closed, and the side D forms the door thereof, being hinged at the bottom and provided with a catch or hook D' at the top. The compartment containing the bags or sheets C is illustrated more in detail in Fig. 2 and is an exact duplicate, except as to size, of all the other compartments. Each compartment is provided with a presser-board E within the closed portion thereof, which is normally forced against the package of bags or sheets C' by means of springs E', whereby the first bag or sheet of the package is kept in contact with the type F of the printing-roller F, pivoted in a case G and projecting through an opening G in the doorD of the holder. Pivoted also in the case G is an ink-roller H, and between said ink-roller and the printing-roller, also pivoted in the case, is a distributing and inking roller H', kept always in contact with both the ink-roller and the printing-roller, whereby the ink supplied to the printing-roller is evenly distributed and applied to the printing-surface of the type-of the printing-roller. The front C of the holder is provided with curved notches, as at D2, and the door D is provided with similar curved notches D3, whereby a portion of the ends and front of each package of bags or sheets is exposed to permit of the outer bag of the package being seized by the iin gers and drawn out for use. This act of drawing out the bag or sheet rotates the printingroller, and thus causes it to impress the letters of the type of the printing-roller upon its surface, the rotation of the printing-roller by frictional contact causing the rotation of the distributing and inking roller, so that a fresh supply of ink is continually applied to the type. each compartment is nearly empty by showing the end of lthe follower-board, thereby enabling the owner to prepare for refilling the holder before any of the compartments become entirely empty. The open portion of the rear permits of longer bags being placed in the dierent compartments.

When, however, it is deemed advisable, the roller illustrated in Figs. L and 5 may be substituted for that illustrated in Fig. 3. In the roller illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 longitudinal grooves F2 are formed, in which separate lines of changeable type may be set, thus permitting ot' a change in the matter printed upon the bags or sheets whenever desired.

The construction and operation ot' our invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and its advantages are numerous and obvious. By its use a dealer may imprint any desired advertising or other matter upon each paper bag or sheet of wrapping-paper as it is used, thus saving the additional expense of having the paper printed, retaining the privilege of printing it or not as it is used. The printing mechanism is exceedingly simple and cheap and may be readily applied to and removed from the holder without the necessity of employing skilled labor.

While we have illustrated and described the best means now known to us for carrying out our invention, we do not Wish to be understood as restricting ourselves to the exact details of construction shown and described,

but hold that any slight changes or variations therefrom, such as might suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic, would clearly fall within the limit and scope of our invention.

As au improved article of manufacture, a paper-bag holder and marker, comprising in combination a case, divided into a series of horizontal compartments preferably open at the rear said case being stepped at the rear to provide compartments of different lengths, a side connected to the case and having a series of openings arranged therein at one side of the series of compartments, each opening having a casing covering the same, each of said casings carrying a printing or marking device, the adjacent edges of the front and side oit' the case being notched, a spring-impelled follower arranged in each compartment, and having a guide at each end, substantially as shown and described.
