The invention relates to steam-engiriessuch, forinstance, as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States No. 105,983, filed by me on May 5, 1902. w 1 The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved valve-gear which is simple, and durable in constructiomyery effective in operation, actuated from the reciprocating cross-head, and arranged to permit minute adjustment of the cut-off mechanism to'run the engine as economically as possible.
The invention consists ofnovel features and parts and combinations of-t-he same, as will be more fully described hereinafterand then pointed out in the claims. A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which .similar characters of reference indicate cor-' responding parts in all the views.

The engine on which the valve-gear is applied is provided with the cylinder A, in which reciprocates the piston B, connected by the piston-rod O with the cross-head D, having the usual pitman connection with the main shaft of the engine or having a connection with the shaft, such as described in the application for Letters Patent above referred to.

Now when the cross-head D reciprocates then the bracket D, by the link K imparts a swinging motion to the lever K, the latter turning, with its guideway L, on the pivot-pin L, held in position by the arm N and link 0. Now this rocking motion of the lever K causes a reciprocating of the stem J and cut-0E valve Jto move the ports g g alternately in register with the port f.
When it is desired to reduce the amount of motive agent passing through the registering ports g f and gf from the chamber H into the admission-chamber G, then the operator swings the hand-lever P in the direction of the arrow (1, (see Fig. 1) to cause the link 0 to pull on the pivot L, so that the guideway L moves up on the lever K to bring the pivotpin nearer to the pivot of the valve-stem J, so that the rocking motion of the lever K is diminished, and consequently the travel of the cut-oil? valve J is reduced to cause the ports 9 g to register but partly with the port f. By moving the hand-lever P into a horizontal position in the direction of the arrow at the pivot-pin L is brought in transverse alinement with the pivotal connection of the stem J with the lever K, so that no movement is given to the slide-valve J, and the lat ter stands then in a closed positionthat is, both ports g g are out of register with the port f.
By the arrangement described the cut-0E of the motive agent can be controlled by the operator to the minutest degree to run the engine as economically as possible relative to the consumption of the motive agent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a valve-gear, a valve-chamber, a valve in said chamber and controlling the admission and exhaust ports, means for operating the valve from the cross-head of the engine, a receiving-chamber connected with the motive agent supply, an admission chamber communicating with the receiving-chamber and the valve-chamber, a valve controlling the admission of the motive agent from the receiving to the admission chamber, means for operating said valve from the cross-head of the engine, and means under the control of the operator for regulating the throw of the said valve, as set forth.
2. In a valve-gear, a steam-chest having a receiving-chamber connected with the motive-agent supply, a valve-chamber, an admission-chamber between the valve-chamber and receiving-chamber and having a port opening into the said receiving-chamber, and ports on opposite sides and leading to the valve-chamber, a rock-valve in the valvechamber and having cut-out portions at opposite sides, and a sliding cut-oft Valve for the port leading to the admission-chamber from the receiving-chamber, as set forth.
3. A valve-gear comprising a steam-chest having a receiving-chamber connected with the motive-agent supply, a valve-chamber, an admission-chamberhavingaport opening into the said receiving-chamber, ports leading to the valve-chamber, a rock-valve in the said valve-ahamber,controlling the admission and exhaust of the motive agent to and from the cylinder, a cut-off valve for the port, leading to the admission-chamber from the receivingchamber, the said cutoff valve having two spaced ports for alternate connection with the said admission-chamber port, and means for imparting a reciprocating motion to the said cut-01f valve from the cross-head of the engine, as set forth.
4. A valve-gear comprising a steam-chest having a receiving-chamber connected with the motive-agent supply, a valve-chamber, an admission-chamber having a port opening into the said receiving-chamber, ports lead ing to the valve-chamber, a rock-valve in the said valve-chamber, controlling the admission and exhaust of the motive agent to and from the cylinder, a cut-on valve for the port, leading to the admission-chamber from the receiving-chamber, the said cutoff valve having two spaced ports for alternate connection with the said admission chamber port, means for impartinga reciprocating motion to the said cut-off valve from the crosshead of the engine, and means for regulating the throw of the said cut-01f valve,as set forth.
5. A valve-gear provided with a cut-ofl": valve, a' lever pivotally connected with the stem of the said cut-01f valve, a connection between the said lever and the cross-head of the engine, a guideway slidably engaging the said lover, a pivot carried by the said guideway, an arm engaging the said pivot and having a fixed fulcrum, and a cut-off lever connected with the said; pivot, as set forth.
