PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. SCIIOLZ, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES O. SOIIOLZ, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,224, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed May 3]., 1901.
To L'LZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN A. SOHOLZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to [0 certain improvements in gas-burners whereby a second combustion is effected, one such combustion occurring within a closed chamber wherein the products of such first combustion and gas are mingled with a suitable proportion of air and the second combustion taking place outside of such mixing-chamber by the burning of the mixed gases and air.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of my improved burner. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the underside of the burner. Fig. 3 is a section elevation on a plane indicated by the line III III, Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I employ a main burner consisting of an annular case or shell 1, having a circular orifice at its upper end, while its lower end is closed by a plate 3, having orifices or openings therein,which are adapted to be closed by a movable plate i, mounted upon the plate 3. Over the outlet or circular orifice at the upper end of the main burner is arranged an annular spreading-plate 5, suitably centered over the orifice and preferably supported by lugs 6, formed on the inner walls of the burner and serving as supports for centering the lugs 7, formed on the under side of 4c the spreading strip or plate. IVithin the annular chamber of the main burner is arranged an annular. burner 8, preferably provided on its upper edge with a rib 9, through which small perforations are formed for the escape of gas. This burner is connected to a supply-pipe 10, extending out through the wall of the casing or shell and connected to a mixing-chamber 11, into which projects a gas-supplying jet 12. The annular burner is arranged at a suitable distance from the outlet-port or circular openin g in the upper endof the main burner, so as to permit a combustion of gas entering through fierial No. 62,519. (No model.)
the supply-pipe 10, such gas being mingled with a suitable quantity of air to permit a combustion thereof. The products of combustion and gas escaping from the annular burner 8 are mingled with air entering in regulated quantities from the base of the main burner, and such mingled gases and air escape through the circular orifice in the upper end of the burner, where a second and complete combustion occurs. By the primary combustion within the chamber its walls become highly heated, so as to heat the mingled products of combustion and gases therein, and thereby increase or facilitate such second combustion.
I claim herein as my invention 1. The combination of an external shell having upwardly-converging sides, a shell having upWardly-divergi11g sides arranged within the external shell, said shells forming between their upper edges an annular slot or burner, an annular primary burner arranged in the combustion-chamber formed by said shells and connected to a gas-supply, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an external shell having upwardly converging sides, a shell having upwardly-diverging sides arranged within the external shell, thereby forming a combustion-chamber, said shells forming be tween their upper edges an annular slot or burner, valved inlets for the combustionchamber, an annular primary burner arranged in the COIllbllSillOll-GlltlIlbQl formed by said shells and connected to a gas-supply, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of an external shell having upwardly-converging sides, a shell having upwardly-diverging sides arranged within the external shell, said shells forming between their upper edges an annular slot or burner, a spreading plate over said slot or burner, an annular primary burner arranged 95 in the combustion-chmnber formed by said shells and connected to a gas-supply, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
