Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA RIPLEY, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
CONSTRUCTION OF BASES FOR STANDS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,291, dated April 16, 1850.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EZRA RIPLEY, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and improved inode of constructing metallic stands or bases used for the support of tables, stands, chairs, musicstools, mathematical instruments, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view and Fig. 2 a vertical section through the same taken through one of the legs, the same letters in dicate like parts in both ligures.
The nature of my invention consists in casting the whole base and firmly fastening it together by means of one central rod passing from top to bottom. Y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to de scribe the same.
I employ a hollow base piece A, and a cap plate B, covering the same. On the legs (C, C, which may be any desired shape) there are hooks a, a, which hook into openings ?2, b, in the base (AQ and are pressed down and held in place by knobs projecting from the cap plate, one of which is shown at c. For a permanent lateral stay I extend the top of the legs d, d, in toward the center in the manner of a lever held between two lugs e, e, projecting from the cap plate To retain the said plate in its relative posi* tion with the base, there are projections g, g, extending into notches in the base. The whole is firmly fastened together by means of arod D, extending from the top of the table or stand to the bottom of the base (A) and is fastened by means of a nut and screw as represented.
The utility and advantage` of the construction of metallic stands, &c., as above is evident, it being simple, and effectual in its thorough security, and is cast and put together without any ling or itting, as is common in cast articles of such nature, and is readily put together and taken apart, there being but one screw which secures every part together, consequently it is readily put in the smallest practicable bulk for transportation.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isrllhe mode herein described of employing a base piece that the legs or feet may hook into, and be held firmly in place by the cap plate and rod running through the center, the same being constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described and represented.
EZRA RIPLEY.
