Description

No. 729,002. PATENTED MAY 26, 1903.
W. SPALGKHAVBR;
INK FOUNTAIN.
APPLICATION IILBD JULY 15.1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented May 26, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SPALOKHAVER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT HOE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INK-FOUNTAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,002, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed July 15, 1902- .To all whom, it may concern: 1
Be it known that LWILLIAM SPALCKHAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Fountains, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of inkfount-ain by which the same trough may be used for inking in solid color throughout or as a sectional trough for different colors and the change from solid color to difierent colors be made quickly and conveniently without the necessity for cleaning the fountain for such change.
For a full understanding of the invention a detailed description of constructions embodying the same in preferred forms and a modification thereof will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in theclaims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section of an ink-trough embodying my invention in the preferred form. Fig. 2 is a partial plan View of the same with the upper doctor removed for purpose of illustration. Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2, showing a modification.
Referring now especially to Figs. 1 and 2, A is the ink-trough proper, containing the solid-ink roller B, provided with the usual doctor 10,adjustable by set-screws 11. Within the trough A is a sectional trough 0, made removable and divided into a number of compartments 12, according to the number of different colors required, each compartment 12 being provided with a roller D, which rollers D are separate rolls mounted together on the shaft 13, which is shown as driven by gear 14 from gear 15 on the shaft of roller B. Each roller of the sectional roller D is provided with a doctor 16, forming a portion of the bottom of the trough 0, these doctors being made adjustable by levers 17 below the tain, as usual.
Serial No. 115,627. (No model.)
roller B by thumb-screws 20 passing through a the rear wall of the fountain A. The sectional trough O is shown as supported above the bottom of the fountain A by foot 21, with which itis provided. When the trough is to be used for solid color, the sectional trough O,with its roller D, is removed from the fountain A and only the solid-color roller B used, as usual in ink-fountains. If to be used as a sectional color-fountain, the fountain A is emptied of ink, although not necessarily cleaned, the roller B is cleaned, and the sectional trough O, with its sectional roller D, introduced into the fountain A and adjusted by the set-screws 20 for the feed of the ink in the difierent sections 12 by sectional roller D to the inking-roller B. In changing from use asasectional-roller fountain to a solid-black fountain it is not absolutely necessary to remove or to clean the sectional trough O or its roller D, but only to remove the colored inks from the compartments 12, as the black ink in fountain A will kill any color transmitted from the roller D to the roller B. If this be done, however, it .Wlll be necessary to clean the roller D, as well as the roller B, in changing from black to sectional colors.
In Fig. 3 a modified construction is shown in which a single ink-roller is used for both solid-black and sectional colors, this roller E being permanently mounted in the ink-foun- The sectional trough Fis set against this ink-roller, so that the partitions between the compartments 12 close the space between the sections of the roller E. The construction of the sectional trough F in respect to the doctors and the means for holding and adjusting the trough in the fountain A may be and are shown as the same, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and the same reference-letters will be used for corresponding parts. In this construction (shown in Figs. 3 and 4) the secparts may be varied without departing from the invention, and many modifications may readily be made therein by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is 1. The combination with an ink-fountain, and its roller, of a removable sectional colortrough in said fountain, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an ink-fountain, and its roller, of a'removable sectional colortrough in said fountain, and a sectional inkroller in said trough delivering ink to the fountain-roller, substantially as described.
3. The combination with fountain A, of a sectional color-trough therein, doctors 16 in the bottom of said trough, and means for adjusting saiu doctors from outside the fountain, substantially as described.
4. The combination with fountain A, of a sectional color-trough therein, doctors 16 in the bottom of said trough, levers 17, sleeves 19, and adjusting-screws 18, substantially as described.
5. The combination with fountain A and roller B, of removable trough 0, having sectional roller D, engaging roller B, substantially as described. a
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM SPALCKHAVER. Witnesses:
G. J. SAWYER, T. F. KEHOE.
