COMBINED SHUTTER AND SASI-I FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,289, dated April 16, 1850.

Be it known that I, THOMAS HARVEY, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved apparatus for fastening closed windowblinds and closed windowsash in such a manner that the blind cannot be unfastened without previously unfastening the sash; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.

Figure l, is a vertical section through a .window frame (A,) window sash, (13,) and blind; (II,) Fig. 2, is a vertical section through a window frame (A,) and window sash, (B,) and representing the inner edge of the blind, (IL) which is hinged to the frame and thrown open; and Figs. 3 and A represent portions of the fastening apparatus detached.

Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

A flat lever f, having a hook rising from its outer end and a notch z', formed in its inner end, as shown in Fig. 3, is placed upon the window sill, and secured by .a screw near its inner end, which serves as a fulcrum for it to turn upon,-as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

g, is a holder made fast to the .inner side of the blind H.

Z, is a latch made fast to, and descending from the lower bar C, of the window sash; the form of which latch is shown in Figs. l and 4. y

m, is a spring catch placed in an opening in the sill of the window, as shown in Fig. l.

The a'bove enumerated parts perform their oiices in the following described manner: When the window sash has been thrown up and the blind has been closed, the shut ting down of the window causes the inclined lateral side of the latch Z, as itenters the notch z', in the lever f, to move the said lever upon its fulcrum and thereby force the hook at its extremity under the holder g, and fasten the blinds; the latch Z also forces back the spring catch m, until the sash descends to the .window sill, when the shoulder of the catch is sprung over the shoulder of the latch and securely fastens down the sash. It will therefore be perceived that the blind cannot be unfastened without first unfastening and raising the sash.

Fig. 2, represents a modification of my fastening apparatus for window sash and blinds. The lever f, is secured to the window sill, and the holder g, is made fast to the blind, in the same manner, and perform the same oliice as has been above set forth; the window sash in this modified form of my apparatus, is fastened down, and the lever prevented from being operated from the outer side, by means of the hook e, jointed to the inner end of the lever, and thrown into a slit in the plate CZ, nia-de fast to the lower bar of the sash.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The lever f, secured by a fulcrum pivot to the sill of the window frame, when it is so arranged that the hook at its outer end can be made to interlock with the holder g, made fast Ato the blind, and when in that position the inner end of the lever be so connected with the apparatus for fastening down the sash, that the lever cannot be operated without previously unfastening the sash, substantially as herein set forth.

2. I also claim the arrangement of the lever f, placed upon the window sill, the holder g, secured to the blind, and the latch Z, secured to the lower bar of the sash, by which when the blind is closed and the Window sash is raised, the descent of t-he sash will operate the lever and thereby securely fasten the blind, substantially as herein seta forth.

3. I also claim the arrangement of the lever f, the holder g, the latch Z, and the spring catch m, (respectively secured to the sill of the window frame, and to the blind and sash,) in such a manner that the closing of the sash will securely fasten it down, and at the same time operate and rmly retain the lever f, in such a position that it cannot be detached from its hold upon the blind, without previously unfastening and raising the sash substantially as herein set forth.
