Be it known that I, GEORGE C. FULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charnpaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Lubricator for Steam-Engines, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lubricators, and particularly to the class of forced-feed lubricators, the object being to provide a lubricator which shall be particularly adapted for automatically injecting oil into the cylinder and upon the piston-rod by the pressure ofV steam that is utilized for operating the said piston.
Another object of my invention is to providealubricator withasight-opening through which the quantity of. oilbeing fed may be readily seen and the amount regulated, and still a further object is to provide a device in which the oil will be constantly kept at such a temperature to insure of its being easily fed; and with these hrieiiy-stated objects in View my invention also consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination and arrangement of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lubricator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken about on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of my improvement, showing the manner of providing branch lubricator-feeds to be used in connection with my invention.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cylinder A, whose lower end terminates in a short nipple A', to which is connected a valve A2, which in turn is connected to the steam pipe or cylinder of an engine. Operating within the cylinder is a piston-head or pressure-block B, carrying a hollow stem or piston-rod B, that protrudes through and works in a stufting-box C', arranged upon a plate C, that is arranged upon the upper end of the cylinder. The said plate is also provided with a feed-opening C2, suitably closed by a Serial No. 100,589. (No model.)
screw-plug C3, and the valve-controlled Ventpipe C4 is arranged opposite the feed-opening. as will be clearly seen.
The piston B is preferably constructed of an upper and loweinv plate B2 and B3, respectively, between which is held a packing ring or disk B4, the whole being screwed onto the lower end of the hollow rod B' and positively retained in position by a nut B5. The lower end of the rod is open, allowing communication between the interior of the hollow rod and the space below the piston B.
A passage-way or channel D is arranged upon the exterior of the cylinder and has its lower end communicating with the nipple A' and its upper end with an enlarged chamber D', which extends entirely through the enlargement through which the channel passes, the ends of the said chamber being provided with glass or other suitable transparent plates D2, which are `heldin place by nuts or caps D3. A small `passage-way E communicates with the-chamber D and diverges therefrom and has its upper end communicating with a recess F, which in turn communicates with the upper end of the cylinder A, and a valve F', carried by a suitable plug F2, controls the entrance' to the said passage-way E, as will be clearly understood, and in practice I arrange a valve-controlled vent-pipe G which communicates with the chamber D' and also a valve-controlled pipe H which communicateswith the lower end of the cylinder A.
While I have shown in the main View of the drawings my improved lubricator as applied to a piston-cylinder, I do not wish to limit myself to that use, as my device may be with but slight rnodiicationv readily applied to other parts of an engine or machine, and, further, by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be seen that my improvement may be utilized for lubricating other bearings other than the piston-cylinder of an engine by attachng the lubricating-cylinder to the pipe I, that enters a valve-controlled box I', carried byasight feed-capp, which may be connected to the bearing of a portion of the machine.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my device is exceedingly simple and vpossesses many advantages over similar devices, prin,

cipally among which is that the oil is fed or dropped under steam-pressure, making it a forced feed, but only when the engineis working and at the time the parts require lubricating, and, further, that when the engine is stopped the feed is automatically stopped and again automatically fed when the engine is started; that by reason of the hollow piston the oil within the cylinder is constantly heated, and therefore prevented from becoming thick in cold weather; that the feed may be regulated, and that the oilcylinder is kept free from Water, thus preventing freezing.
From the foregoing the operation and advantages of my improvement will be readily understood, and it will be particularly noted that by arranging the pistou as described I provide two separate and distinct chambers within the cylinder, one of which is adapted for the reception of the oil and the opposite or lower chamber providing a steam-box, and by this arrangement all possibility of the oil being mixed with water or moisture and the freezing of the oil resulting therefrom is positively prevented. It should also be stated that my improved lubricator will work with balanced or unbalanced steam-pressure and that it will be found equally advantageous in places Where steam is not `used, as the lubricator may be operated by hot or cold air, hot
.or cold water, or any other fluid-pressures which can be obtained most cheaply and to the best advantage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a lubricator, the combination with a cylinder, of a piston therein, a hollow pistonrod extending upward from the piston and passing through the top of the cylinder, the hollow in said rod opening unto the space below the piston, a nipple extending below the veees cylinder and leading from its lower portion Vand adapted to communicate with an enginecylinder, a longitudinal rib formed on the eX- teror of said cylinder, said rib being longitudinally perforated, said passage-way com- I municating at its upper end with the upper portion of the cylinder and at its lower end with the nipple and a suitable valve controlling the passage of oil to said passage-way.
2. In a lubricator, a cylindrical oil-receptacle vhaving an exterior integrally-formed shoulder' extending longitudinally down one side, said shoulder being interior-1y recessed throughout its entire length thus forming an exterior passage-way between the upper and lower portions of the receptacle, said passageway beingA first contracted and then enlarged in its upper portion, of a sight-glass in said enlarged portion, a valve controlling the contracted portion, an integral tubular nipple extending downward from the lower portion of the receptacle and laterally communicating with said passage-way, and a piston-head in the oil-receptacle thereby preventing passage of oil from the upper portion of the receptacle to the tubular nipple except by means of vthe exterior passage-Way.
3. In a lubricator, the combination with a cylinder, of a piston-head dividing the cylinder into oil and steam chambers, a hollow piston-rod extending through the piston-head and also through the oil-chamber, the interior of said rod having communication with the steam-chamber, and a valve-controlled oil-conduit formed in one side of the cylinder and adapted to effect communication between the oil and steam chambers.
