To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND DEE YORK, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Portsmouth, Scioto county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Rolling Blanks for I-Beams or Girders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved process of rolling blanks for flanged structures, such as I-beams or girders; and the object of my invention is to improve upon processes heretofore devised for rolling blanks for such structures and to allow the yielding or red uction of the web portion of the blank substantially unimpeded by the metal in the flange portions.
My improved process is fully disclosed in this specification, and suitable apparatus is described therein and shown in the accompanying drawings. for carrying out my process.

The collar or flange-like portions (9 of the two rolls B B are shown as of such diametrical size that when the rolls are properly adjusted those of each roll contact with those of the other; but this is not an essential feature. The collar or flange-like portions b are diametrically smaller. Hence a space is left between those portions of the two rolls. It will be seen that this pass 2 is adapted to transform the reduced ingot or slab resulting from the operation of pass 1 into a blank;or partly-formed I-beam or girder having, as
usual, flange-like portions, but having'in addition' to these flange-like portions a web whichis thickened longitudinally along its middle portion on both sides. The pass 3 has a central cylindric portion 11 which is quite large diametrically. On each side of this cylindric portion are cylindric portions b", which-are diametrically smaller. Beyond one of the cylindric portions 12 is one of the collar or flange-like portions 17 already mentioned, and beyond the other cylindric porftion-b is a collar or flange-like portion b, which not only forms part of'pass 3, but also part of pass 1. tion b is shown as of the same "diametrical size as 'the collar or fiange-like portion W. The sides'of the cylindric portion 19 and adjacent sides of the collar or flange-like portion b b are inclined so as to"diverge toward their peripheries." The blank produced by pass 2 facilitates the subsequent shaping by pass 3. In the latter operation the central thickened portion ofthe blank produced by pass 2 is thinned down to the proper dimension, and this results in widening the web and forcing the flanges of the I-beam or girder apart to the proper distance for a finished I-beam or girder blank. The strain exerted on the metal in passes 2 and 3 is materially less\especially at the flanges of the I-beam or girder blank, by reason of thefact that in pass 2 there is left in the blank a thickened central portion, which is the principal part operated upon in pass 3.
E E E E designate upright rolls, which for convenience may hereinafter be designated as long upright rolls. F F are other upright rolls, which for convenience may hereinafter be referred to as short upright rolls. The short upright rolls F F are intended to have fixed positions and to have no movement of any kind except rotary movement. The long upright rolls E E E E are, however, intended to be supported in adjustable bearings, so as to be capable of movement lengthwise of the axis of the rolls B B for the purpose of coacting with the different passes 1, 2, and 3 of those rolls. As these rolls and the means for supporting and adjusting them are fully illustrated in an application for United States Letters Patent which I filed on the 22d day of January, 1902, and which has been designated series of 1900, Serial No. 90,733, I will not illustrate or describe anything more than these rolls themselves.
It will thus be seen that according to my improved process the blank is first rolled to reduce the metal along one or more longitudinal lines, leaving a thickened web portion and flanges separated thereby, and then said thickened web portion is rolled and reduced, whereby the yielding and reduction of said portion is practically unimpeded by the metal in the flange portions. The thickened web portion is therefore reduced separately from the flange portions and with decreased resistance and the lateral flowing of the metal of the web is facilitated independently of the metal in the flanges.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved process substantially as herein described, of rolling a blank for an I- beam or girder, which consists in first rolling the blank to less than its intended width and with thickened portions disposed longitudinally on opposite sides of the web, intermediate of the lateral boundaries of the latter, and then rolling said thickened portions to widen out the web and thereby produce the completed blank.
2. The improved process substantially as herein described, of rolling a blank for an I- beam or girder, which consists in first rolling the blank to less than its intended width and with longitudinal thickened portions disposed equally on both sides of the web, intermediate of the lateral boundaries of the latter, and then rolling and reducing said thickened portions to widen out the web and thereby produce the completed blank.
The improved process substantially as herein described, of rolling blanks for flanged structures, which consists in first rolling and reducing the metal along one or more longitudinal lines, so that there will be flanges and a thickened web portion separated by portions of the web, and then rolling and reducing the said thickened web portion whereby the yielding and reduction of said portion is substantially unimpeded by the flange portions.
