Be it known that We, JAMES II. BAKER, GEORGE li. SHnvLIN, and lIinnoanicl; H. BAKER, citizens of the'United ing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have 'invented an Improvcmentiu CentrifugalPulp-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in centrifugal mechanism, and the saine comprises improvements upon the devices shown and described in Letters Patent granted to us November 19, 190i, No. 686,962, and Febrnary ll, 1902, No. 693,215. these centrifugal devices sonic difficulties have arisen in the full and complete separationiof the good stock from the slvers and in the operation of the air employed in connection therewith, and difficulties have also arisen in connection with the eiiicient delivery of the stock i'roin the inning device to the centrifugal wheels of the apparatus, all of which it is the object of our present invention to overcome.
Our invention relates especially to devices for releasing a certain amount of air between' the casing and the screcirplates, usually in addition to the devices shown and described in the latter of our patents hereinbefore recited, and also to devices for closing upa clean-out opening in the upper central part of the structure, and which devices forni a distributerfor the stock entering the machine.

A screen cleaner m is emploi-ved, as described in our aforesaid patent, arid the same is provided with vertical rods 18, connected to .and operated bya curved plate `17. As in our Patent No. 693,215, we prefer in the present machine t0 make curved openings in the cover d with flanged edges 9 and to provide curved open-work metal plates or gratingsvlO, that fit over the openings and within the flanged edges, so that in the operation of the machine the air within the machine under force can escape th rough these gratings after passing through the screen-plates la, said gratings being over the space orchamber formed within the machine between the( case e and the segmental screen-plates'c. "The parts hereinbefore described while employed in machines heretofore made use of by us form no necessary part of our present invention,
but are described for the purpose of a complete structure. v
The device in the nature of a hollow column forming part of the casing and connecting the trough with the top of the screen for releasingr a certain amount of air between the casing and the screen-plates comprises the following parts: The casing e is formed of segments, and at the junction of said scgments we prefer to place hollow columns n of rectangular form in cross-section. lt will be noticed from the structure of the ringframes ff that parts thereof are secured by rivets to the upper and loweredges of the casing-plates e. The upper portion is conY nected with the top dof the centrifugal pulpscreen and the lower portion with the trough g. At the respective sides of these hollow columns In the vertical parts of said frames f are respectively connected to said columns and said plates e also by rivets. The parts forni a complete closure about rthe circular segmentalscreen-plates la und a casing for the centrifugal pulp-screen.
It will be noticed from Fig; 2 that the inner surface of' the hollow column n is flush and substantially continuous with the inner surface of the casing e, and by reference to Fig. 4t it will be noticed that this column is provided on the outer surface at the lower end with an inclined base 'It' with an inletaperture 13 and at the upper end with an exit-aperture 14, and in this ligure arrows show the direction taken by the air con li ned in the space between the screen-plates it'. and the casing e, the saine passing through the aperture i3 up the hollow column and out ut the exit-aperture 14.
From Fi". 5 it will be noticed that there are partitions 20 in the central portion of the hollow column n at the upper aperture lai and outside of the inclined base yn'. These partitions stiften the column at said places, and they may extend the entire height of the colu mn or be located simply as shown. This feature we prefer to eniployin addition or, in other words, as supplemental to the grating structure l0 in the cover d of the pulp-screen- The construction in vertical section of said hollow column I'iv/,with its inclined base n', pre- `vents the possibilityY of the good stoclt after passing through the4 screen-plates 7c lodging in or clogging up the opening or space in said column, a liberal discharge of air being; however, th us provided for, so that all of the air which passes through the uscreenplates 7o by virtueof the action of the centrifugal beater-wheels may escape. Were this otherwise, the most perfect action of the screen-plates k in separating the good stoclc from the slivers would be liable to be iinpeded and interfered with, as there would be a perceptible back pressure resulting from the air confined in the space between the screen-plates and the casing.
In the cylinder I, surmounting the cover d, and through which the incoming pnlp-stoch enters to the centrifugal pulp-screen, we provide a clean-out opening 'l5 at the side opposite to that at which the stock enters. This opening is closed by a hollow cover-closure o, having an edge flange extending all around the same, and when the part o is in position, as shown in Figs. l and 3, the said flange lits `over the edge ot' the clean-out opening of the cylinder Z, and said cover-closure iu external dimensions agrees with the internal dimensions of theclean-out opening. Upon opposite sides ofthe cylinderlwe providestud-bolts 1G, pivoted to lugs of the said cylinder, said studbolts being adapted to swing and having hand-wheel nuts, and on opposite sides ot' the cover-closure and as continnatious of the edge (lange thereof we provide lugs lll, adapted to receive the stud-bolts 1G, by the tightening of which the cover-closure is held securely in place in and to the cylinder l. The inner surface of this cover-closure o is curved in crosssection and inclined downward in vertical section, (see Figs. l and 55,) and adetiectonplate o, formed integral with or connec-ted to the cover'closure o, constitutes an extension of said cover-closure, the vupper edge thereof coinciding with the lowcrcurvcd Iedge of the cover-closure und the free edge thereof beingninde concentric with thoshafttt.
The inner portion ol' the cover structure, that is curved in cross-scction and downwardly inclined in vertical section, is provided with a curve the radius of which is about eleven inches, while the radius of the dellcctcrplatc o' is much less and only about seven inches. (lonscqucntly the delcctorplate is contracted in relation to the inclined surface of the part o, and the curved portion of the dellcetoi-plate is substantially concoin IOO IIO
tric to the shaft. Consequently the pulpstock as it is delivered to the machine is directed toward the shaft at the center of the machine, and a promiscuous delivery and spreading ontof the pulp-stock is prevented, the concentration of the pulp-stock at the center facilitating the even delivery of the same at the center ot the beater-wheel, insuring each beater-Wheel receiving a propor- 4tionate amount of the pulpstockio be acted upon. This structure occupies a position at the opposite side oi' the shaft to that of 'the inlet-pipe l2 for the pulp-stock, and in the operation of the device as said pulp-stock enters the machine it is delivered against said inclined surfaces and is by them directed into the central part of the machine, and when falling said pulp-stock is as nearly equally divided as possible between the blades of the respective beater-wheels, so that equal strain is applied lto the blades of said beaterwheels in agitating and delivering the same againstthe centrifugal screen-plates, and the tendency that heretofore existed of delivering said pulp-stock in unevenly-divided quantities to said heater-wheels is obviated, and the machine is therefore caused to run more regularly, with less vibration, and to do more efficient work and treat a largery quantity of material in a given time;
We claim as our invention i l. In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combination with a heater-wheel, segmental screenplates and a casing surrounding ythe same, of
a device connected to and forming a part of the casing and'providcd therein for the discharge of airfroni the lower portion of the chamber between the casing and the screenplates, substantially .as set forth.
2. In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combination with a heater-wheel, segmental screenplates and a casing surrounding the same, of one or more hollow structures connected to the casing at the intersection of the plates thereof and forming continuations of said casing, with inlet-openings forair at the lower portion and com mnnicating with the chamber between the casing and the screen-plates and with apertures in the outside forair at the npper portions.
3. In a centrifugal pulpscreen, the combination with a beatenwheel, circular segmental screen-plates and a casing formed of segmenvtal plates surrounding the screen-plates, of a series of hollow columns, means for connecting the hollow columns to the easing-plates at their points of intersection so that said hollow columns form eontinuations of the casing-plates with a smooth unbroken surface in the interior, said hollow columns being provided with'apertures at their lower ends opening into the chamber between the casing and the screen-plates and apertures at their upper ends communicating with the interior of the columns whereby the pent-up air in said chamber of thel centrifugal screen may escape up the hollow columns into the' atmosphere. v

In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combination with a beater-wheel,circnlar segmental screen-plates and a casing composed of segmental plates, of a series of hollow columns at the intersections of said plates, each column being of substantially rectangular form" in cross-section having an aperture 13 at the lower inner portion, an aperture-14 at the outer upper portion, an inclined base n and partitions 20 adjacent to the upper or exit aperture 14, and at the lower end.
5. In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combi` nation with a beater-wheel, segmental screenplates and a segmental casing, of a cover over l the beater-wheelandacylinderiittingthereon at the central aperture thereof, a cover strueture closing a clean-out aperture in said cylinderand at the opposite side thereof to the entrance therein of pulp-stock, said cover structure having a downwardly-inclined inner surface andan extension thereof projecting toward the shaft of the centrifugal pulpscreen, substantially as set forth.
6. In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combination with a beater-wheel, segmental screenplates and a segmental casing, of a cover over the beater-wheel and a cylindertting thereon 95 at the central aperture thereof, said cylinder; having a clean-out opening at one side and an opening in the form of an integral pipe at the other side for the delivery of pulp-stock to the machine, a cover-closure of hollowi'orm roo fitting the clean-out aperture and having an edge ila-nge extending around the erige of'said clean-out opening, means pivotallyg'lconnected to the cylinder and adapted to engage the hollow cover-closure for holding the same in 105 position, the inner surface of said cover-elosure being curved in cross-section and down? wai-diy inclined in vertical sectiomand a de Hector-plate extending below and com'ieoted to said cover-closure, `and of curved and in- I Io clined form withits free edge adjacent to the shaft of the centrifugal pulp-screen for di- Verting the incoming pnlpstock to the central portion of the beater-wheel, so that the same is evenly set forth.
7. In a centrifugal pulp-screen, the combination with a top plate having a central aperture, a cylinder' fitting and received upon the same and formed with an integral pipe-secizo tion at one side for the entrance of paperstock from a source of supply and at the op- I posite side thereof with a clean-out opening, of a hollow Vcover-closure device having par allel vertical sides, a flanged edge fitting over x25 the edge'of the clean-out opening of the cylinder, an inner portion curved in cross-seeticn and downwardly inclined in vertical section and a deilector-plate forming a downwardly-inclined extension to said eover-clo- 13o distributed, substantially as 1x5 sure and extending below the same and toward the shaft; of the centrifugal pulp-screen, bhe edge of said defieotowplete being formed ofv a. curve of less radius than that o' the iucined part of the cover-close re, and substantially concentric `with the shaft, and adjustn'ble devices for connecting the cove r-ciosure in position.
