PATENT OFFICE.
RATTLE.
L-JPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,258, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed October 15,1902-1 To to whom, it natty concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER JAMES BAILEY,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Claflin, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have made certain newand useful Improvementsin Battles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in rattles; and it consists in the novel construction of the rattle, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figurel is a perspective view of a rattle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on about line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the short sections or plates.
In carrying out my invention I make the rattle-box A of a series of plates B, O, D, E, F, and G, which are interlocked to form the box containing the ball or balls H and the plate B being prolonged or extended to form the handle B of the rattle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The several plates are constructed substantially alike, recessed in one face at 0', providing the shoulders 0 near the opposite edges of the plate and facing inwardly, as best shown in Fig. 4, which'illustrates the plate 0, to overlie and secure the plates, which are fitted edgewise in the recess '0 and up' against the shoulders 0 as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 4.-
By the construction as shown and described I provide a rattle which can be readily made of wood and can be put together and secured without the use of nails, screws, or other separate fastening devices and which will present an attractive appearance.
In putting the parts together I stand the handle onend, place the bottom plate in first, then the side next to me, and then I insert the right and left pieces. The top piece is then as No. 127,387. (No model.)
putinand slid or forced down the handle un- I til it jumps into place.
An especial advantage results from cutting away the portion of the plates between the inwardly-facing shoulders .0 as thereby the platesmay be madequite thin between the shoulders in order to givethe volume of sound desired in arattle. I by this construction am able to secure from a plate of suitable thickness in wardly-facing shoulders of the desired depth and at the same time reduce the thickness of the intermediate portion of the plate in order to give the rattling effect'desired.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rattle herein described consisting of six flat plates provided on their innerfaces near their ends with inwardly-facing shoulders and having the inner faces of the plates between their respective shoulders formed {ina plane with the base of saidshoulders, the plates being fitted together with the shoulders of one plate overlapping the edges of the plates fitted edgewise against such first plate, theiplanes of the inner faces of the several plates coinciding with the side edges of the plates fitting edgewise against such plate whereby the inte rior capacity of the box is coequal as to its dimensions with the full width of the plates,
'the interlocking shoulders are provided on each of said plates, and the portions of the plates bounding the receptacle for the rattling devices'are comparatively reduced in thick- LESTER JAMES BAILEY.
