SEECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,105, dated May 5, 1903.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. DODSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to safes for the protection of jewels, silverware, and other valuables from the danger of fire and burglars.
The principal object of my in vention is to construct a safe which will be a protection against fire and burglars, at the same time to make it of simple but durable construction, and in such a manner as can be manufactured inexpensively, the further object being to provide means for securing the safe in the position desired.
My invention consists of the new and original features of construction and the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My method of accomplishing these objects is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, which are part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the door open. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation. Fig. 4 is a top or plan view with the door open.

The safe is constructed, as shown in Fig. 1, of a front head or end A, cast of suitable material, and a rear head or end A. A central cylinder or casing a, .being formed of sheetsteel, butts against the shoulders a and a on the heads A and A and is held firmly and securely in place by bolts a and a which are threaded at one end with a right-hand thread and at the other end with a left-hand thread, so that by screwing the rods or bolts a and a into the threaded sockets b and b in the heads or ends A and A the ends are drawn vA is a shoulder b Serial No.107,871 (No model.)
suitable filling which is a non-conductor of heat, so as to insure protection to the contents of the safe from the effects of heat in case of fire. The space between outer shell 0 of the door and the inside plate 0 of the door is also lined with the non-conducting filling. In the center of the rear head or end A is an inwardly-extending hub or boss 01, having an annular opening therein for the admission of a bolt 61, which serves the double purpose of securing the safe in its po sition and holding the inner end or head d in position. This head or end d has its outer edge formed into a flange 01 At the inside of the lip or rim 6 of the front head or end The inner casing 19 is rolled of sheet-steel or any other suitable material into a circle of smaller diameter than the annular opening formed by the lip or rim b on the head or end A and placed on the interior of the safe. On being released it will immediately spring outwardly into place, its springiness holding it firmly against the shoulders d and h The body of the safe is supported upon a base e, having cross-walls e, extending from side to side. This base is cast of suitable material and of such dimensions as to givea firm bearing for the large heads or ends A and A. The base may be suitably secured to the body of the safe so as to be practically a part thereof.
The door is formed of an outer shell 0 and an inner plate 0, suitably attached thereto, the space in the interior of the outer shell 0 being lined with a non-conducting filling.
'The periphery of the door is shouldered to correspond with the shouldered wall of the rim or lip 19 on the head or end A in order to fit closely to this shouldered wall when the door is closed. A combination-lock c of ordinary construction is fitted to the door, operating to secure the bolt 0 when projected and to release the bolt, so as to allow itsbeing withdrawn from the annular opening 0, placed to receive it in the rim or lip b of the head or end A. A handle 0 is provided for moving the bolt 0 and connected thereto in any suitable manner. The bolt 0 passes through the circular wall of the door 0 and when projected enters an annular opening c. The face of the head or end A has on its exterior an eye 6', and the door 0 on its outer face has two eyes 6 and when the annular opening in the eyes'e and e is in register a hinge-pin c is placed in the annular opening, holding the door on the head or end A, so that it can swing on the hinge to open or close.
The inside of the inner cylinder b is partitioned off by walls b into spaces suitable to contain books, papers, and other valuables. A bolt f is shown passing through the lower part of the inner cylinder b for the purpose of securing the safe in position. Another bolt may also be used passing through the hub or boss d on the rear head or end A.
The shape of the safe is very convenient for performing such machine-work as is necessary, and the arrangement of parts is such as to allow it to be quickly and easily assembled and as a whole making a safe which can be manufactured very inexpensively, and yet be durable, strong, and compact.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is
1. In a safe, the combination of two circular heads or ends having shoulders upon their outer circumference; an outer casing cylindrical in shape, abutting upon said shoulders and bolts having left and right hand threads out upon their ends, securing and holding the said outer casing against said shoulders and a base supporting said heads and outer casing and means to secure and hold said base to said outer casing, a lip or rim projecting inwardly from the front head or end, a shoulder on said rim, an inner cylinder or casing sprung against said shoulder an inner head or end having a flange formed on the edge thereof to further support said inner cylinder, filling of non-conducting material between said inner and outer cylinders and said inner and outer ends, a door hinged to the front end or head fitting to and coinciding with a circumferentially-stepped wall, on the inwardly-projecting rim of the front end or head, a hinge for said door, means for se curing said door when closed, annular openings in said inwardly-projecting rim to receive the bolt of the door, and means to secure said safe in position for the purpose set forth substantially as described.
2. In asafe, the combination of a front head or end, with an inwardly-turned rim or lip, havingshouldered steps thereon, and a shoulder on the inner end of the shouldered step, a rear head having a central hub or boss to support an inner end or head having a flange formed on its circumference, an inner cylinder fitting against the shoulder on the lip or rim of the front head or end and the flange on the inner head or end and shoulders on the periphery of said heads or ends, an outer casing or cylinder abutting upon said shoulders, filling in the space between the inner and outer cylinders and the inner and outer rear end, a door fitted to the shouldered rim or lip of the front end, means for securing the door in place, partitions dividing the inner cylinder into compartments, means for connecting the front and rear heads or ends for the purpose set forth substantially as described.
3. In a safe, the combination of a front head or end, a shoulder on the periphery thereof andhavinganinwardly-turned lip or rim,with a shoulder on its inner surface, a rear head or end, having a shoulder on its periphery, and an inwardly-extending hub or boss in the center of said rear head; an outer casing abutting upon the shoulders upon the periphery of the said front and rear ends; bolts to secure and hold said outer casing against said shoulders, an inner rear head secured to the head or boss in the center of the outer rear end and a flange formed on the edge thereof; an inner shell or casing sprung against the shoulder on the inwardly-turned lip or rim of the front head or end and the flange on the edge of said inner rear head or end, filling between said inner and outer cylinders, partitions dividing said inner cylinder, means for securing said safe in position, a door hinged to the front head or end, means for securing said door in place for the purpose set forth substantially as described.
4. In a safe,the combination oftwo heads or ends, shoulders on the periphery thereof, a cylinder or casing abutting upon said shoulders, bolts to secure and hold said cylinder against said shoulders, a base to support said heads and cylinder, a lip or rim projecting inwardly from the front head or end, a shoulder on said rim, an inner cylinder or casing sprung against said shoulder, an inner head or end having a flange formed on the edge thereof to further support said inner cylinder, filling of non-conducting material between said inner and outer cylinders and said inner and outer ends, a door hinged to the front head or end fitting to and coinciding with a circumferentially-steppedWall, on the inwardly-projecting rim of the front head or end, a hinge for said door, means for securing said door when closed, annular openings in said inwardly-projecting rim to receive the belt of the door, and means to secure said safe in position for the purpose set forth substantially as described.
