Description
J. DAVIE. WATER'HEATER.
APPLICATION FILEDAPR. 16
N0 MODEL.
PATENTED APR, 21, 1903.
WITNESSES INVE/VTUI? (famed fiaz/ae ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES DAVIE, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
WATER-H EATER.
{SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,219, dated April 21, 1903. Original application filed September 6, 1901, Serial No. 75,717. Divided and this application filed April 16, 1902. Serial To aZZ whorm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES DAVIE, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved water-heater which is particularly designed for use in connection with the feed-water filter of boilers, but'which may be used for heating water for any purpose, a further object being to provide a water-heater which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, the heating of the water being accomplished by steamcoils arranged within the body of the heater.
This application is a divisional application based on another application for Letters Patent filed by me September 6, 1901, Serial No. 75,717, in which the heater described and claimed herein is shown and described in connection with a feed-water filter for boilers; and the invention described and claimed herein is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved water-heater; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig.1; Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional view of the head or top portion of my improved heater and showing the method of connecting the steam-coils therewith, and Fig. 4 a similar view showing the method of connecting the steam-coils with the bottom of the heater.
In the practice of my invention Iprovide a main casing F, which is preferably circular in cross-section and is provided with two or more coils G and H, which are placed one within the other, and, by preference, Imake the area of the bore of the tubes from which the said coils are formed in the same ratio to one another as the area of their respective heating-surfaces are to one another. The coils G and H are connected with the cham- (No model.)
ber L, the casing of which forms the head I of the heater, by means of a coupling J, secured to studs 1 in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and the coils are secured in the bottom of the casing of the heater by means of hollow plugs or screws K, secured therein, as indicated in Fig. 4.
The chamber L is for the admission of live steam to the coils G and H and is provided with a steam-inlet M, controlled by a valve M and a branch N for admitting vapor and steam which enters through the passage M.
v The drain from the coils G and H is collected in the chamber 0, formed by a bottom cap or cover 0 which is fitted with an outlet-drain O and the inlet to the heater is by way of a branch V, and the outlet is by way of a non-return valve W, which controls a passage W and which also controls the communication between the passage W and a supplemental chamber W*", with which a pipe I W communicates.
The method of connecting the heater with the filtering device and the operation thereof in connection with said filtering device is fully shown and described in the application hereinbefore referred to; but this invention is not limited to the use of this heater in connection with said filtering device, as it will be apparent that the heater is adapted to be used in various other connections.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A water-heater comprising a casing having an inlet branch V, an outlet branch, a valve W for controlling the outlet branch, a head I provided with a steam-chamber L, means for admitting steam to said chamber, supplemental branch inlets communicating with said chamber and vertically-arranged steam-coils within the main casing and communicating at their upper ends with said steam-chamber and'at their lower ends with a chamber at the bottom of said casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. A water-heater comprising a casing having an inlet branch V, an outlet branch, a valve W for controlling the outlet branch, a head I provided with a steam-chamber L at the top thereof means for admitting steam to said chamber, supplemental branch inlets communicating with said chamber and vertically-arranged steam-coils within the main casing and communicating at their upper
