is somewhat inconvenient,- and, further, the sifting-frames, which are directly inclosed by the main frame, must be of several millimeters smaller dimensions than the clear width of the inclosing framework, as they otherwise could only be? inserted with difficulty, and this small difference between the inclosing and the inclosed sides produces vibration and knocking during the working. The arrangement of frames which forms the object of the present invention is intended to avoid these drawbacks. It has the form shown in Fig. 3. It is preferably made of ironfor example, of.U -ironinstead'of wood. It is characterized by merely consisting of two long sides f, connected in the middle by a crossbar g, but not united at the ends into a closed frame, the narrow ends of the frame thus being absent. Fig. 1, the other-frames being laid upon these, and as the main frame is open at the I ends (Fig. 3, right-hand side) the sieve-frames may be inserted from the ends without any difficulty.
In order to produce the firm connection between the sieve-frames and the main frame necessary for working,tightening-screw drawrods h are employed, which when their nuts 2' are screwed up cause the spring-iron side bars f of the. main frame to approach one another and to press firmly against the sieveframes d. When the 'nutsi are turned in the .opposite direction, the side bars f openeither .by their spring-poweror compulsorily, when an arrangement is adopted in which the nut is rotatably connected to the side bars, as shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 4:. In this arrangement each draw-rod it passes through the U-shaped side bars f of the'inain frame, and its nut 71 has a ring it, over which an annular part Z, secured to-the U-irons f, engages. In this arrangement the nut 11 carin both directions of'movement.
If in spite of the fact, as experiments have shown, that the clamping in the arrangement hereinbefore described is in every way sufficient it is desired also to produce a compression in a direction at right angles to the direction of action of the draw-rods it, such pressure may be obtained without its being necessary to employ separate draw-rods arranged longitudinally to the side bars f. For this object an angle-piece or hook 'n, Fig. 5, may be arranged at each of the four free ends of the side frames f, which angle-pieces are connected together in pairs by removable drawrods 0, which may be drawn up by Lightening their nuts 19. The arms q of the said hooks or angle-pieces it thus exert a pressure (in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5) against the free outer sides of the sieve-frame and provide for a firm pressing together in this direction of the 0scillating parts.
Instead of employing draw-rods 0 such as just described an arrangement such as is shown in Fig. 6 may be adopted, in which by turning a screw 0", which passes through one arm of an elbow-levers and bears against the bar of the U-iron side piece, said elbow-lever s is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow, so as to press against the frames longitudinally without exerting any force which would tend to counteract the clamping action of the side bar f, upon the end of which said elbow-lever is pivoted.
It is evident that where screws are mentioned equivalent elements may also be employedsueh, for instance, as eccentrics, wedges, cams, or the like.
I declare that what I claim is- 1.- In a plan sifter, a plurality of side bars, means for drawingsaid side bars together, a plurality of sifting-frames arranged between said side bars, angle-pieces upon the ends of said side bars, and means for operating said angle-pieces, whereby they are adapted/to retain said sifting-frames in position.
2. In a plan sifter, a plurality of side bars, means for drawing said side bars together, a plurality of sifting-frames arranged between said side bars, angle-pieces upon the ends of said side bars, and draw-rods connecting the angle-pieces upon the ends of said side bars, for operating said angle-pieces whereby said angle-pieces serve to retain said sifting-frames \Vitnesses:
