- @nimh tstes @stent @frn L. W.- T. LODGE, OF PETERSBURG, KENTUCKY. Letters Patent No. 72,51-1, dated December 24, 1867.
rurnovsn ROAD-someta.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, L. W. T. LODGE, of Petersburg, in the county of Boone, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Road-Scraper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, Areference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is a side view of my improved road-scraper or excavator.
Figure 2, a rear en d view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in thefconstruction of scrapers for excavating road-beds, and other "l similar purposes; and consists in devices for connecting the scraper with the stock, and for holding it in place when working, as hereinafter more particularly described.
A is.an ordinary inclined stock,`attached vto the 'draught-beam B and handles C C. The scraper D, of ordinary form, is pivoted or hinged at the back on the ends of a wide hee1plate, a, fastened to the stock A in such manner that the scraper is held level and steady in its position while at work, withoutA requiring side stays, as usual. A double/catch, b, straddles the stockA, to which it is pivoted, and at the rear end a spring,
e, is fastened to it at one end, and to the stock A at the other end, in such manner that the front ends of the catch In bear down on thc upper side of the scraper, to lock and hold it in place when thrown back to work; and by placing the foot on the rear end of the catch b, and bearing upon it, the spring a gives way and releases the catch so that the scraper will turn over forward to dump its load and spread the dirt. Two side springs, d d, are pivoted to the under side of the beam B, and to the upper corners of the scraper, formed and operating in such manner that vwhen the scraper is free, by a slight backward movement it will be thrown back to its place against the stock A, ready for operating. The scraper may be connected with the-beam by a chain in such a. manner as to prevent any strain on the wing-springs.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pateuti The arrangement of the scraper D, hinged to the broad heel-plate a, the double catchb, pivoted on the stock A, and held by the spring c, and the side springs d d, pivoted to the beam B and the upper corners ofthe scraper, al1 combined and operating as herein described.
L. W. T. LODGE.
