IMPROVEMENT lIN HEAD-BLOCKS.
dlgs .tlgthirle marit In im tigen tettt @nieuwe mating nrt nf tige anni.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known thatI, M. C. LEWIS, of Glasgow, in the county ofHoward, and State of Missouri, have invented,
a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Motion for Head-Blocks of Saw-Wills; andI do `hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable 'others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure `1 represents a. side view of a carriage of a. saw-mill with my improvement in head-blocks for feeding.
Figure 2 represents a top view of a carriage of a. saw-mill, showing my improvement.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the line x a', iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in the feed-motion device of the head-,blocks of a. saw-mill, for which a. patent was granted to E. G. Dyer, November 13, 1860, No. 30,623, and ita-consists in attaching two hand-levers pivoted on the same fulcrnm, each lever being connected by'an independent rod with one of the head-blocks, and so arranged that they may work together, and move both the head-blocks simultaneously, or work separately, and move either head-block byitself, and thus enable the Sawyer to Work the log in any manner he wishes towards the saw while standing in one place, as hereinafter more particularly described..v
A represents the carriage of a saw-mill, and B B the head-blocks, both of which are constructed-in the ordinary manner. C is the rack or guide, in which work two hand-leverage a', both pivoted at the lower end on'the same pin 6, and tted together so that they can act asasingle lever, when held by a spring, c, or may be separated, so as to work independently of each other. The lever-a is connected by'a rod, d, with the headblock B, and the lever a by a` rod, d', with, the head-block B.
It will be seen that when the two levers a a are joined together, they will operate on both the head-blocks simultaneously and move them forward alike, hut, that when the levers are separated, either one of them may be worked to operate on one of the head-blocks with which it .is connected to move it by itself, and thus manage the log with pliecision to make either parallel or tapering cuts, as maybe desired.
l Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is
,The double hand-levers a a', connected separately, with the head-blocks B B by the rods bld', operating in such a manner that,.when the levers are connected together, both head-blocks are moved simultaneously, and, when disconnected, each lever moves a di'erent head-block, as herein described for. the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed Aby me, this 7th' day of September, 1867.
' M. C. LEWIS.
