IMPROVEMENT nr STAIRS.

TO ALL PERSONS -TO WHOM vTHESE PRESENTS MAY COME:

Be it known that I, JOHN KOCH, of Brookline,vin the county of Norfolk, and Stute of' Massachusetts, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Stair-Steps; and I do hereby declare the sanne to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is al top View,

Figure 2 a. front edge view,

Figure 3 a. longitudinal section, and

Figure 4 a. transverse section of a, stair-step, as provided with my improvement, which consists in the combination of a. plate of cork with the tread or floor of the step, the plate of cork being inserted within such plate or oor. y v v t The object of the plete of cork is to form not only :in elastic surface for the foot of a. person to step on, but a surface which will prevent the foot from slipping on the stair. By arranging the cork within and so as to ll a, corresponding recess made in the step, the ends and rear edge of the cork plate will be protected by the wood from injury. v

In the drawings, A denotes a. stair-step, or the top board or floor thereof. B is the plate of cork inserted in e recess, C, mede in the step or part I claim the combination and arrangement of the plate of cork ivith=the stair-step, the Whole being as and for the purpose hereinbefore specified.
