UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA BURNS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHBOlL-ER.
SPECIFIGATIQNforming part of Letters Patent No. 724,800, dated April 7, 1903. Application filed October 10, 1902. Serial No. 126,699. (No man.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA BURNS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboil ers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washboilers; and the invention has for its primary object to con struct a boiler having a dividing partitionj therein which separates the boiler into two compartments, and the invention aims to construct a boiler of this type with means for preventing danger of the water in'one compartment splashing or boilinginto the other compartment, and also to substantially prevent steam arising in one compartment from entering into the other compartment of the boiler.
To this end the invention consists in providing a washboiler with a partition which may be located either centrally thereof or to ward one end of the boiler, so as to divide the boiler into two compartments. This partition is extended above the rim or upper edge of the boiler, and the upper end of the partition is substantially-convex to conform to the lower face of the boiler lid or cover. This boiler lid or cover carries on its lower face a seat which receives the upper end of the partition and forms a seal therewith to prevent water or steam from one compartlnent passing to the other compartment. 7
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this s pecificat ion,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the'several views,in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the washboiler constructed in accordance with my'invention. Fig.2 is a trans- Fig.3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the lid or cover, showing a transverse section of a portion of the partition and a modified form of seal. Fig. 4 isa like View of still another modified form of seal.
To put my invention into practice, I provide-a boiler 1 with a transverse partition 2, which may be securely soldered to the bottom and to the sides of the boiler l and may be located centrally ofthe boiler or toward one end thereof, as maybe desired. This partition 2 is of a greater height than the boiler, the upper end thereof extending beyond the upper edge or rim of the boiler and being shaped to conform to the lower face of the lid or cover 3. This lid or cover has secured by suitable means ;to its lower face a seat or shield 4, which receives the upper end of the partition 2. This seat or shield forms a seal withthe upper end of the partition 2 and prevents the water and also practically prevents the steam from one compartment passing to the other compartment of the boiler. This seat or shield is preferably so constructed as to be provided with inclined inner and outer walls, whereby any water splashing upon the same will readily drain off.
In Fig. 3 I show a partition 2, constructed at its upper end with a bead 3' for engagement with the seat or' shield, the latter being of the same form of construction as shown in v Figs. 1 and 2, and in Fig. 4 I show a partition 2 provided at itsupper end with a substantially inverted-V-shaped strip 2 which is secured to the upper end of said partition and which fits within-a correspondingly-shaped seator shield 2, carried by the lid or cover 3. With this construction of boiler, the two compartments being effectually separated one from the other, the coarser clothes may be placed in one compartment and the finer clothes in the other compartment, whereby they may be subjected to the cleansing process at the same time without any danger of the finer fabrics being injured by the coarser ones.
Although I have shown the partition arranged substantially centrally of the washboiler, yet in practice] prefer to provide one of the compartments of a slightly-greater size than the other, and to this endthe partition will be arranged adjacent to one end of the boiler.
In the practice of my inventionit will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from thegeneral spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what the edges of said seat extending outwardly, 10 I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters substantially as described.
Patent, is In testimony whereof I afiix my signature In combination with a boiler having a parin the presence of two witnesses. 5 tition dividing the same into two eompart- EMMA BURNS ments and extending above the upper edge or rim of the boiler, of a lid or cover, a seat \Vitnesses: secured thereto, said seat formed of a single A.
