UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUSEBE ARPI N, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND JOHN ONEILL, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BlFURQA-TED GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,77 5, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed October 2'7, 1902. Serial Ito-128,841- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUSEBE ARPIN, a subject of Edward VII, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bifurcated Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in bifurcated garments, such as are Worn by' with the fleshy part of the thighs, and it not 4 tion, and Fig. 4: shows a means for detachably only insures comfort, but minimizes perspiration, and thereby conduces to cleanliness.
The improvement is simple and cheap in construction, easily applied to the garment, allows the wearer to bend, stoop, or assume any required position without discomfort, and enables access to be obtained easily to the organs.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of a nether garment with my attachment applied. Fig. 2is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with parts broken away and in secsecuring the attachment in place.
A designates'a bifurcated or nether garment, which may be either a pair of drawers, trousers, or overalls, the same having the leg portions to, the seat I), a fly c, and a waistband (1.
B designates my attachment, which consists of a shield made of fabric or any suitable material, secured in the garment to extend alongside of the crotch a between the leg portions 0.. This shield may be secured permanently or detacliably in the garment; but as a rule the shield is stitched in place, as shown by Figs. 1, 2, and 3, although the shield may be buttoned 'removab'ly within the garment, as at e in Fig. 4. The shield is cut to the pattern shown by the drawings in order that it may extend from the front to the back, as shown by Figs, 1 and 2, and to lie alongside the crotch, as in Fig. 3. Said shield when it forms a part of the garmentis stitched to the front near the fly 0 along the line indicated at f,'while the rear portion of the shield is stitched to the seat and back along the line of stitches at 9, but the middle portion of the shield is left free or unconfined along the line of the crotch a, as indicated at h, in Fig. 3. r
In the use of the garment the shield B separates or isolates the organs from the thighs, soas to prevent rubbing and chafing. The free middle portion of the shield along the crotch and in one leg portion provides an opening or space at h, which allows the es- ;cape of lint or dirt and provides for ventilation, thus promoting the comfort of the wearer.
Although I have shown the shield applied Within the garment on one side of the crotch, it is evident that it may be arranged on the other side of the crotch, and, if desired, duplicate shields may be used, one on each side of the crotch. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A nether garment provided with-a shield extending from front to rear adjacent to the crotch, one end portion of the shield being attached to the backportion of the garment, and the other end portion being secured to the front of said garment; the intermediate or middle portion being unattached at either side edge to the garment, and also disposed adjacent to the crotch and partly within one I name to this specification in the presence of l two subscribing witnesses.
EUSEBE ARPIN.
leg portion of the garment; said free or nnconfined middle portion of the shield being spaced relatively to the crotch and adapted I 5 to form therewith an intermediate ventilating-space.
In testimony whereof I have signed my \Vitnesses:
E. M. TOPLIFF, M. S. BENNETT.
