SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 724,349, dated March 3'1, isos.
Application filed '.Tune 24, 1902.
rately, and positively supporting a soft-metal pipe-section during the operation of making a wiped joint for firmly connecting the nipple or hard-metal member with the soft-metal or lead pipe-section.
My invention comprehends a peculiar and novel construction of nipple or hard-metal tubular section, and in its more specific nature it embodies an improved wiped joint, hereinafter fully described in detail and specifically pointed out in the appended claims,
reference being hadr to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im'- Fig. 2 is 'a vertical section of the same, showing the lead pipe-section slipped over its joint-sustaining end. Fig. 3 shows the lead pipe-section bent to engage the groove o f the nipple-neck and hung on the end enlargement or bead thereof. Fig. 4. is a view of the wiped joint complete. Figs. 5 and 6 are horizontal sections taken on the lines 5 and 6 of Fig. 4.
The joint-holder 1 (shown in the drawings) may have its body or threaded end madeof any desired form, as the formation of said end of the joint;holder forms no part o f my invention, which is confined to the peculiar shape of the nipple end thereof, (designated by, 2 in the drawings.) The nipple end 2 has an annular groove 2, the lower edge of which merges with a bead or pendent portion 2b, which has a greater diameter than the body portion 2, as clearly indicated by the horizontal sections 5 and 6, the reason for which will be readily apparent by reference to Fig. 2, in which the lead pipe-section B is shown over the nipple end of the holder to a point under the groove 2'.
By forming the bead or lower end of the nipple 1 of a greater diameter than that part Serial No. 113,036. (No model.)
of the nipple above the groove the upper end b of the pipe B will be spaced apart from the nipple portion 2, and thereby permit of readily bending or swaging'the said pipe end h inwardly and downwardly to produce an annular inturned rim b for projecting into the groove 2a of the nipple, and therebyprovide positive means for suspending the pipe B from the solid-metal holder 1 without requiring any special sustaining means and for maintainingitinaproper connection with the said holder 1 during the operation of putting on the external solder andmaking a clean and eective wiped joint.
I am aware that a Vhard-metal coupling member has heretofore been provided having a special construction of nipple end whereby to provide for conveniently making a sweatjoint, (see Patent No. 689,684., dated December 24., 1901;) but the nipple end in the construction disclosed in said patent is not adapted and could not-be practically employed for making wiped joints. In the said patent the nipple end of the coupling below its groove is of less diameter than Vthe body of the nipple above the groove, whereby to form an offset, so that the upper end of the lead pipe to be fitted on the hard-metal member will crowd the solder (caught in the groove in the said patentedconstruction by dipping the nipple into a solder-bath) out suficiently to produce a solder rim for insuring a firm sweatjoint.
My construction of nipple differentiates from what has heretofore been provided in this line, so far as I know, in the peculiar correlative formation of the nipple-shank 2, its groove 2, and the pendent or bead portion below the groove, and in my construction the groove 2a is not intended to gather solder at all, and the nipple therefore requires no dipping. The increased diameter of the lower end provides, as it were, a bearingpoint over which to -swage'or bend inward the upper end h of-thepipe B, and by reason of the decreased diameter of that part of the nipple above the groove sufficient space is provided to permit a proper bending inward of the said end b of the pipe B, and, furthermore, by reason thereof a firm grip of the said end b in the groove 2 is assured for sustaining the pipe B properly upon the member l without the necessity of steadying the annular groove at the point Where the said reduced portion merges with the Wide part of the nipple end, @soft-metal pipe fitting over the reduced end of the nipple, and having intnrned edges for engaging the groove in the nipple, and ulead wiping surrounding the nipple end of the hard-metal member and the upper end ofthe lead pipe, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
