TAO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, L. FREDERICK CERF, of New York, in thecounty and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casters; and I do herehy declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had f p tothe accompanying plate of drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my invention.
Figure 2 is a. sectional elevation of the same.
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts.
Thisinvention relates to a. new manner of constructing furniture-casters, so `that they will be strengthened and prevented from bending and breaking.
The invention consists in forming a. projection on the sleeve, which tits around the pivoting-pin; said projection sliding on the lower edge of the ring, which is laid around the furniture-leg, or on the lower edge of the leg itself.
The object of this invention is to prevent the bending and breaking of the pivoting-pin andsleeve.
In the ordinary casters, as they are now in use, the weight of the article to which thecaster is attached has the tendency to bend the pivoting-pin directly below the leg of the article, so that the pin is broken, andthe caster made useless. By arranging the aforesaid support between the two arms projecting fromV the sleeve, `the strain will be transferred more directly to the centre of gravity, and the pivoting-pin `will be neither -bent nor broken by the strain.
A represents the pivotingfpiu of a. furniture-caster; 4B is thc sleeve fitted around it, and resting upon a shoulder, a, formed o'n the pin, as shown in fig. 2; C C are two arms, projectingfrom the sleeve ]3, and forming the bearings for the supporting pin I1, upon which the roller I) is mounted; E is a ring, usually arranged around the lower end of the leg F of an article of furniture; is aplate, fastened to the under side ofthe leg; H is a lng,V projecting from the sleeve B, between the arms C C, as shown, and reaching to the under yside of the leg itself, as shown. The weight is thus, to a great extent, transferred from the upper to the lower part ofthe p in A, and the same will therefore not be so easily bent and broken as heretofore.
Thesame invention can be applied to those casters in which the piu A works in a sleeve arranged within the leg F, in which case the support H will project directly from the pin A. i
I am aware that revolving supports upon the 'sleeve have heretofore been madeand used, butas they form no part of my invention, I do not therefore claim them; but having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentr The fixed supporting-lug H, upon one side of the sleeve B, and between the caster-arms GC, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
