Description

@with gisten etnt @frn f GEORGE KENDALL, 0F "SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No.' 71,310, dated November 26, 1867.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:.
Be it known that I, GEORE H. KENDALL, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commonwealthof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding and Pressing-Machines for Reinsg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being hadito the accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the drawings#V Figure l is a plan view. i
Figures 2 and 3'ar'e end views of my improved device. 4
My invention consists in arranging peculiarly-shaped rollers in connection with a folding device, whereby the leather strips from which the rein is made are first folded and then pass through-the rollers, where they are' pressed in form, and are ready to be stitched. l i i g In the drawings, the rollers A. and B are placed in' front of the folders and D, and are operated by gearwheels, so as to move in conjunction with each other. The folders consist of` plates of metal bent over so as to guide the leather into upper and lower folds. These are placed over and in a. groove,` E,"of the Vwidth ofthe leather, when folded, this grooveV being eut into the bed of the machine, and being opposite to the opening left between the rollers. In fig. 2:'it is' shown that th'e leather a has one of its edges folded by the lower folder C nearly across the entire width of the bottom, while the other edge is folded by the upper folder l), so' as to `lap over the under fold withA its edge a little past the centre, the stitching being afterward runclose to this edge and through the centre of the rein lengthways. The leather thus folded passes into the space between the'rollers,
4and is pressed in this form so as to be readily stitched. In fig. 3 is shown the shapeof the rollers, 'the upper one, A,`having agroove, AF, the width of the rein, and the lower one, B, having a corresponding projection, G, which meshes in withit. The bottom surfaceA of the groove F is varied in depth so. as to conform to the sectional shape of the rein, theedge b in the centre being made soas to smooth'oii` the edge ofthe upper fold.
By this means I obtain a great saving in time and work, obviating the necessity of rbusting the reins before t they are stitched, and also forming them much more neatly and accurately, the operation of pressing the reins by means of the rollers requiring no extra time, as it is accomplished by the same operation and in the same c time as would otherwise be required to'pass the leather through the folders, and even facilitating thisglust process'. i
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination of the rollers A and B, having the grooves F and projection G, with the folders C and D,
the parts being arranged and constructed substantially as and forthe purpose shown. Y
