AX OR HATCHET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,554, dated November 4, 1902. Application filed February 6, 1902. Serial No. 92,859. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that LWILLIAM LAWTQN, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axes or I-Iatchets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.

The invention relates to axes or hatchets.

The object of the invention is to provide a hatchet or ax which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation illustrating my invention as applied to a hatchet,.and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.

In the construction of the hatchet or ax a piece of steel of suitable thickness has stamped from it a pattern which is bentinto the form shown in the drawings and constitutes a complete instrument. In the drawings a hatchet is shown; but it is evident that by a slight modification in the form of blank an ax could be produced.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, a denotes the blade of the hatchet, b the eye, and cthe head or pole. The blade is flat from the point 1 to the point 2, is formed with an arched curve from 2 to 3, is curved outwardly from 3 to 4 to form one side of the pole or head of the hatchet, is bent laterally from 4 to 5 to form the working face of the head or pole of the hatchet, andfrom 5 to 6 it is curved inwardly to form one side of the eye, and at this point the twosides are welded or secured by a rivet to 7' it is curved outwardly and then inwardly to form the opposite side of the eye, and at the points 2 and 7' the parts are welded or a 7. From the 'points'd second rivet is passed through the two parts. It will thus be seen that I am enabled to stamp out of a single piece of metal a blank .which by simply bending may be formed into a hatchet or an and will be light and at the same time strong and durable.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the inventionwill be understood without requiring an extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made Within the scope of the invention Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An implement of the character described, comprising a blade, eye, and'pole, struck out from a single piece of metal and bent to form said eye and pole, substantially as set forth.

2. A blade having at its inner end oppositely-projectingbulges,rivets connecting the ends of said bulges, and a head or pole extending rearwardly from the inner ends of said bulges and integral therewith, substantially as set forth;

3. A hatchet or ax comprising a blade bent to form an eye, the ends of which are riveted or welded together, said eye having a rear ward extension formed into a head or pole, substantially as set forth.

4:. A hatchet or ax constructed from a single piece of metal and bent to form an eye and a pole, substantially as set forth.

5; A hatchet orax constructed from a single piece of metal bent to form an eye and a pole, the sides of the eye being riveted or welded together, substantially as set forth.
