ALBERTO. ARTMAN, OF GREENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WHEEL-ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR PLO WS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,031, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed April 21, 1902. Serial No. 103,975. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. ARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Wheel-Adjusting Device for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved wheel-ad j usting device for plows adapted to be readily attached to an ordinary turning plow without altering the construction of the latter; and it consists in thepeculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a turning plow of ordinary construction provided with my improved wheel-adjusting device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional elevation showing the wheel, the standard by which it is carried,-the plate to which the standard is pivoted, and the rod to connect the upper end of the standard to the adjusting-lever. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same at right angles to Fig. 2, the plow-beam and the connecting-rod being shown in crosssection. Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the plate which is employed as the pivotal bearing for the standard.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a standard 1, which is composed of a pair of bars 2, that are preferably of the form shown in the drawings, with their upper and lower ends curved rearwardly. A cylindrical bearing-sleeve 3 is disposed transversely be tween the lower ends of the standard-bars 2 and is connected thereto by a bolt 4, which extends through openings near the lower ends of said standard-bars and through the bore of said sleeve. The wheel 5 has its bearing on the said sleeve and is disposed between the bars 2 of the standard, as will be understood and as shown in the drawings. The standard-bars are provided somewhat above their centers with corresponding adjustingopenings 6. A plate 7 is employed, which is provided on its upper side with upstanding side flanges 8 to engage the sides of a plowbeam, the said plate being adapted to be placed against the lower side of the beam at a suitable distance from the front end thereof and to be secured thereto by means of bolts 9, which enable the plate to be readily ing 25.
attached to and detached from the beam. v
The said plate has downwardly-extending ears 10 on its sides, which ears have trans-.
verse central openings 11 below the bottom of the plate. A bolt 12 passes through said openings and through appropriate openings 6 in the standard-bars and pivotally connects the standard to the plate. The plurality of adjusting-openings 6 with which the standard-bars are provided enable the standard to be pivotally mounted at any desired point to effect an appropriate initial vertical adjustment of the wheel 5.
' A plate 13 is detachably secured on the upper side of the plow-beam near the rear end thereof by bolts or other suitable devices.
The said plate has a segment-rack 14: on its upper side, and to the said plate is pivotally connected the lower end of an adjusting-1ever 15 by a bolt 16. The lower end of the said ad justing-lever 15 is disposed in an opening 17, which is formed in the plate 13. A spring-pressed dog 17 carried by the said adjusting-lever 15, operates in a guide 18, with which said lever is provided, and is adapted to engage the segment-rack to lock the said lever in any desired position. A lever 19 is pivoted to the lever 15,.near the upper end thereof, and is also pivotally connected to the dog. Said lever 19 enables the dog to disengage from .the segment-rack to release the lever 15 and enable the latter to be moved. A connecting-rod 20 has its rear end pivotally connected to the lever 15, as at 21. The said connecting-rod has its front end disposed in a longitudinal opening or bore 22 in a forked head 23. Thereby the said connect ing-rod is slidably connectedto the forked head. That portion of the latter in which the connecting-rod is disposed is provided with a series of adjusting-openings 24, and thesaid connecting-rod has a transverse open- Said opening registers with one of the openings 24' in the forked head, and a key 26, inserted in said registering openings, connects the forked head-to the said rod, as will be understood. The forked arms of the head 23 are disposed between the upper ends of the standard-bars 2 and pivotally connected thereto by a bolt 27.
It will be understood from the foregoing and by reference to the drawings that by shifting the lever 15 the standard 1 may be turned on its pivot 12 to raise or lower the wheel 5, as may be desired. When the wheel 5 has been appropriately adjusted, the dog is engaged with the segment-rack, thereby locking the lever 15, and hence also locking the standard 1 to maintain the wheel in the desired position. The forked head being slidably connected with the connecting-rod, the said head may be adjusted on the said rod, and hence my improved attachment is adapted to be used on plows the beams of which vary in length.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a plow, a segmentplate detachably secured on the rear portion of the plow-beam, an adjusting-lever having its bearing on said segment-plate, a bearingplate, detachably secured to the under side of the front portion of the plow-beam and having upstanding flanges engaging the sides of the latter, a standard having a pair of bars disposed on opposite sides of the beam and bearing-plate and pivoted at a point intermediate their ends to the latter, a connecting element between the lower ends of said standard-bars, a wheel between the standard-bars,
mounted for revolution on the connecting element, a head pivoted to and disposed between the upper ends of the standard-bars and a rod, connected to the lever and slidably connected to the said head, substantially as described.
2. A wheel-adjusting device for plows, comprising a segment-plate, an adjusting-lever having its bearing thereon, a bearing-plate, a standard comprising a pair of bars pivotally connected at points intermediate their ends to the bearing-plate, disposed on opposite sides thereof and shiftable on their pivot, a wheel disposed between and mounted for revolution at the lower end of the standard-bars, a head between and pivotally connected to the upper ends of the said bars and a rod pivotally connected to the lever and slidably connected to the head, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
