CHARLES MERRTTT, oF SoUTH VWaYMoUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.'
Letters Patent No. 71,036, 'dented November 1 9, 1867. v
IMPROVEMENT 1N AAPPARATUS roe 4Drentev HAIR.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MERRITT, of South Weymouth, of the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a neWand useful Apparatus for Dyeing Hair; and I do hereby Vdeclare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in theaeeouipanying drawings, of which* Figure l is a Side view, and
Figure Q a longitudinal section of'it.
In Such drawings, A denotes. ahollow cone, formed with a long slot or opening, a, through its side. This cone, at or near its hase, is fastened vto the'shorterarm of one of a pair of curved levers, .B C, formed and jointed together very much like the levers of a pair o fseissors. Within the cone is a stung of sponge, D, which projects through the opening a, i'n`manuer as represented. To the vshorter-arm of the other lever a. long jaw, E, is fastened and arranged alongside of the openinga, the wholeheing as represented in the drawings.
Preparatory to the apparatus being put inuse, a solution of nitrate of silver, or other pro-per coloring matter, is to be Supplied to or introduced vwithin the cone, care being taken to 4saturate the sponge `with the solution. The instrument may next be passed-into the hair of a persons head, .portions of it from time to time hein-g grasped and drawn between the sponge and the jaw,sol as toapply the dyeing matter to the hair close to the scalp, and as'far along the hair as may be desirable, to impart to it the necessary amount of coloring matter. A cork,l b, fitted into the base of the cone, willserve to keep thc dyeing liquid within the cone.
I have found an apparatus' so'eonstruoted a, most eieient vand convenient means of applying dye to hair, whether of the faee'or other portions of the'head.
I claim as myrinvention the apparatus substantially as described, that is, as composed of the jointed curved levers, and the cone, sponge, and jaw, arranged together substantially as set forth.
' CHARLES MERRITT.
