Letters Patent No. 71,008, dated November 19, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-COUPLING.
dlgs Sttehnle return tu in tigen tetirr @anni mit making ont nf tige-5min,
` TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
, Be it known that we, GEORGE HoDsoN and JAMES HoDsoNfof Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an improved Shaft-Coupling and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention consists of a shaft-coupling composed of an outer portion` with internal inclined ribs, and an inner severed portion with external inclined ribs; the two parts being adapted to each other and to the shaft,
p and secured together, all substantially as described hereafter, so as to form an efficient coupling, 'by which two t shafts may be readily, accurately, and firmly secured together, and-from which the shafts may be as readily disconnected.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an end view of our improved shaft-coupling.
Figure 2, a transverse section of the same.
Figure 3, a longitudinal section on the line 1-2, iig. 2.
Figure 4, alongitudinal section on the line 3-4, iig. 2; and
Figure 5, a longitudinal section showing a modification.-
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. l
The coupling consists of two main parts, A and B, the former being a hollow cylinder, closed at the end a (with the exception ofen opening for receiving the end of the shaft D) and open at the opposite end. The piece B also -consists of a hollow cylinder, severed longitudinally by a slot, fr, g. 2, and having at its outer end a circular flange, d, which is arranged to fit snugly but slide freely within the exterior portion A of the coupling. The end of the shaft D passes about half way through, and Iits snugly inthe inner portion B of the coupling, and is met or nearly met by the end of the shaft D. Within the hollow cylinder A, and forming part of the same, are two ribs, h 7i, the edges z' z' of which are inclined, as shown in fig. 3, so that the ribs are further apart at the open end of the cylinder than at the other end of the same; and between these ribs t the two projecting ribs ff on the inner portion B of the coupling, one being situated on each side of the slot x. Two bolts, m m, pass through the end a of the cylinder A, and through the Bange d of the inner portion- B of` the coupling, and on the outside of the latter thc bolts are furnished with suitable nuts n, on tightening which the inner portion B is' forced into the outer portion A of the coupling, and the ribs ff of the former are consequently forced between the ribs L h of the latter, thereby contracting the inner portion B, and blinding it to the shafts with a 1 firm gripe. l
It will be observed that as the shaft D iits snugly in the rear end a of the hollow cylinder A, and the flange d of the inner portion of the coupling fits snugly in the outer portion, the exterior of the coupling must always be concentric with the shaft, and afford an available driving-pulley for receiving a belt. It will also be seen that after loosening the nuts n, the two parts ofthe coupling maybe readily drawn apart so as to permit the inner portion to -expand and set the shafts at liberty. The bolts m and their nuts may be dispensed with and a hollow projection, g, fig. 5, on the end of the part B, may extend through the end a for the reception of t e. nut, s, which, when tightened, bears against the end a, and forces the inner portion B into thc outer portion A in the same manner as by the tightening ofthe nuts n.
We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent h The within-'described coupling, composed of the outer portion A, with its internal inclined ribs z, and the inner severed portion B, with its inclined ribs ff; the two portions being adapted to cach other and to the shaft,
and secured together, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
- In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses..
GEORGE I. HODSON, JAMES L. HODSON.
