IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-RAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol 71,994, dated December 10, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. CRUMP, of Williamsburg, county of Galloway, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dropper-Platforms for Harvesters 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specication, in wl1ichV Figure l. is a side elevation of Inyimprved dropper, With the inner shoe and a portion of the inner standard or support broken away, for the purpose of better illustrating some of the parts 5 and Fig. 2 is a detached view ofthe eccentric arm by means of which the -dropper is operated. i
My invention consists in a novel arrangement of means for operating the dropper-platform in the employment of peculiarly-con'- structed adjustable cantor detlectin g boards in combination With the dropper; and in the arrangement of means for adjusting the dropper-platform to adapt it to the character of the grain in which it is operated, as hereinafter explained.
To enable others to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A represents the iin ger-beam of a harvester, attached at its outer end to a divider or dividin g-board or runner, B, of any suitable or usual construction, and at its inner end to a similar shoe or runner, and to the main frame of the machine either directly or through the inner shoe, and by means of a hinge or rigid connection, as preferred.
C is a cant or defiecting board, attached to the outer shoe or dividing-board by means of bolts or screws, (represented atte) and made adjustable thereon, to admit of varying its relation to the finger-bar and dropper by means of a series of holes, al al, through any one of which the holdin g-screw may be passed for securing it to the divider. A similar deflectingboard is secured to the inner shoe, or to other suitable support, at the inner end of the ngerbeam, and made adjustable in a similar manner.

These uprights may be arranged in a vertical position at or near the finger-bar, as shown; or they may be placed some distance in rear of said bar in such position as to insure their being out of the way of the falling grain, and inclined forward in such manner as to aiiord a support or bearing at asuitable l1eight, either directly or through horizontal arm D2, for the rock-shaft E, as shown in Fig. l.

J is a flat spring, riveted at its lower end to the arm I, and at its upper end bearing against and working upon a stud or arm, D3, secured to the rear end of arm D2.
K is another spring, Wound or coiled uponi` a drum, L, attached to standard D1. Said spring is provided at its free end with a loop,
which may be made to t over the freeendof` the arm or rod I, and may be used instead of spring J, or may be made supplementary theref to, for the purpose of increasing the tension` upon said arm, as the nature of the Work may require.` l l 1 M is a lever, provided with or rigidly connected to an upright, N, which is pivoted in an arm attached to the inner standard, as shown at N', Fig. 1. The rear end of lever M is provided with a grooved friction-roller, O, so arranged as to Work againstor in contact with `the curved rod I 5 and the forward @nu of said i l lever is provided with the treadle I?, which is intended, in practice, to be so arranged as to be in convenient position to be operated by the foot of the driver in his seat on the machine.
The operation is as follows The machine being advanced over the ground, and motion imparted to the cutters in the usual manner, the grain, as it is cut, is deposited upon the -platforni H. The cant-boards C, which over- -ing the rock-shaft E to roll in its bearings,
when the platform, suspended therefrom, is swung backward and upward into position shown by red lines in the drawing, thereby giving to the platform such an Ainclination as will cause the grain to slide ofiI and be deposited in a compact gavel upon the ground. The foot of the attendant is now raised or removed from the treadle P, when the weight of the platform, assisted by the springs J K, one or both, causes the platform immediately to return into position to receive the grain as it is cut, until another gavel is formed, when the operation is repeated. The lever M may be so t arranged as to be operated by hand, or automatically, if preferred.
The cant-boards C, as above explained, are made adjustable relative to the finger-bar, and may be set forward or back, according to the character of the grain, whether long or short; and the platform is also made adjustable upon the pendent arms F or bodily upon the supporting-standards D Dl, by means of perforations and set-screw or pins d d1, for a similar purpose. These cant-boards are cut away on their under rear surfaces, in the manner shown by the drawing, to receive and cover the ends of the platform, andwhen adj usted or set backward carry the platform back with them, and thus adapt the platform to receive long grain, and vice versa. The platform is set up and down for a like purpose, and also for the purpose of causing it to work in proper relation to the cant-boards when thus adjusted.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The curved eccentric arm I, applied to the rock-shaft E, and operated in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The swinging lever M, or its equivalent,
in combination with the curved eccentric arm,
foroperating the platform, as described.
3. The arrangement of one or more springs in combination with the curved eccentric arm I, for the purpose set forth.
4. The manner of adjusting the height of the 'swinging platform upon the supporting arms and uprights.
5. The adjustable cant or deflecting boards G, in combination with the swinging platform, as described.
