ROBERT TURNER, OF NEW YORK, AND BENJAMIN R. OORLEY, OF
BROOKLYN,
PLATE-PRESS NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,909, dated February 3, 1903.
Application filed July 25,1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT TURNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York, and BENJAMIN R. OoRLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Plate-Press Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to copper and steel plate printing; and its object is to provide a new and improved plate-press attachment which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to automatically stop the plate-press after each impression.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the tripping-lever and cam in a tripping position ,and Fig. 4is an end ele vation of the same, showing the tripping-lever in a retaining position.
The plate-press on which the improvement is applied is of usual construction and mounted on a frame A, in which is journaled a D impression-roller B, operating in conjunction with a bed or table C, mounted to travel longitudinally on friction-rollers O and receiving an initial forward movement by an arm D on the impression-roller .B engaging a cam E on the said table 0. The return movement of the latter is accomplished by the usual weight F, (see Fig. 2,) and the under side of the said bed or table travels over a pressure-resisting roller G, located in vertical alinement with the impression-roller B.
Serial No. 116.929. (No model.)
On the rear portion of the main frameA is journaled a driving-shaft H, provided with a pulley H, connectedby a belt with other machinery for imparting a continuous rotary motion to the said shaft H. On the shaft H is secured a clutch member 1, adapted to be engaged by a clutch member I, mounted to turn loosely and to slide lengthwise on the shaft H, and on the said movable clutch member I is secured or formed a sprocket-wheel J, over which passes a sprocket-chain J, also passing over a sprocket-wheel J secured on the shaft B of the impression-roller B. The movable clutch member I is engaged by a shifting-lever K, fulcrumed on the main frame and pressed on by a spring L to normally hold the shifting-lever K in such a position that the movable clutch member I is out of mesh with the clutchmember I.
On the under side of the shifting-lever K is fulcrumed a tripping-lever N, pressed on by a spring 0 to hold the end N of the said tripping-lever in an uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 2, the said end N extending through an opening K in the shifting-lever K, as plainly indicated'in Fig. 3.
The end N of the tripping-lever N is adapted to be engaged by a cam P, secured on the impression-roller shaft B, adjacent to the sprocket-wheel J ,'as plainly indicated in the drawings. The cam P is provided with an annular flange P, on the outer face of which is secured a cam-face P adapted to engage the end N of the tripping-lever N, so as to press the same downward against the tension of the spring 0 to finally bring the top of the end N to the outer portion of the said camface P which outer portion is in transverse alinement with the peripheral face of the flange P to allow the spring L to swing the lever K automatically into an inactive position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It is understood thatwhen this takes place the movable clutch member I is moved out of engagement with the clutch member I.
The operation is as follows: When the plate to be printed from is in position on the bed 0 and it is desired to make an impression, then the operator takes hold of the shiftinglever K and presses the outer end of the tripping-lever N, so that the' end N is flush at its top surface with the top of the lever K, and then the operator imparts an outward swinging movement to the lever K, so that the clutch member I is moved in engagement with the clutch member I, and consequently the rotary motion of the shaft H is transmitted by the sprocketwheels J and J and sprocket-chain J to the impression-roller B to rotate the latter and to cause an impression to be made in the usual manner, it being understood that the bed C is started on its forward movement by the action of the arm I) on the cam E. As soon as the roller B has started to turn the operator releases the tripping-lever N, so that the spring 0 thereof imparts a swinging motion to the tripping-lever to cause the end N to pass up and engage the outer face of the flange P of the cam P, rotating with the impression roller B in the direction of the arrow 01.. (See Fig. 2.) The operator now releases the lever K, and as soon as the impression-roller B has nearly completed one revolution then the cam-face P engages the end N of the tripping-lever N and imparts a swinging motion thereto against the tension of the spring 0 until the end N reaches the outer portion of the cam-face P in alinement with the peripheral surface of the flange P, so that the spring L now imparts a return swinging motion to the lever K, and the latter now shifts the clutch member I outwardly and out of engagement with the clutch member I, and consequently the sprocket-Wheels J and J sprocket-chain J", impression-roller B, and cam P come automatically to a stop, with the impression-roller B again in a starting posi tion for the next impression. The bed 0 also returns in the usual manner by the action of the weight F.
For making a second impression the abovedescribed operation is repeated-that is, the operator swings the shifting-lever K outward, with the tripping-lever N having its end N in a lowermost position, so as to clear the flange P of the cam P, and the operator holds the lever K long enough in this position until the roller B is started and the camface P has left its lowermost position and about reached the position shown in Fig. 2. The operator then releases the tripping-lever N, which now engages with its end N the outer face of the flange P to lock the shifting-lever K temporarily in position, with the clutch member I held in mesh with the clutch member I.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the impression-roller B automatically stops in starting position after each impression, and the im pression-roller can only be started again by the operator manipulating the lever K and tripping-lever N, as previously explained.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A plate-press having a driving-gear for an impression-roller, and a device controlled automatically from the impression-roller, to stop the driving-gear after each impression, the said device consisting of a cam on the shaft of the impression-roller, a clutch on the drive-shaft, and two substantially horizontal levers, one working in a horizontal plane and operating the clutch and the other working in a vertical plane and acted upon by the cam and both being manually controlled for starting the driving-gear, as set forth.
2. A plate-press attachment comprising a driving-shaft, a, gearing for driving an impression-roller from the said driving-shaft, a clutch for connecting the driving-shaft with the said gearing, and a shifting device controlled from the impression-roller of the platepress for throwing the clutch out of gear after each impression, asset forth.
3. A plate-press attachment comprising a driving-shaft, a gearing for driving an impression-roller from the said driving-shaft, a clutch for connecting the driving-shaft with the said gearing, and a shifting device controlled from the impression-roller of the platepress for throwing the clutch out of gear after each impression, the said shifting device'comprising a spring-pressed shifting-lever for the clutch, a retainer on the said lever and a cam revolving in unison with the impression-roller and adapted to be engaged by the said retainer, as set forth.
4. A plate-press attachment comprising a driving-shaft, a gearing for driving an impression-roller from the said driving-shaft, a clutch for connecting the driving-shaft with the said gearing, and a shifting device controlled from the impression-roller of the platepress, for throwing the clutch out of gear after each impression, the said shifting device comprising a spring-pressed shifting-1ever for the clutch, a spring-pressed trippinglever fulcrumed on the said shifting-lever and a cam revolving in unison with the impression-roller and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the said tripping-lever, as set forth.
5. A plate-press attachment comprising a driving-shaft, a gearing for driving an impression-roller from the said driving-shaft, a clutch for connecting the driving-shaft with the said gearing, and a shifting device controlled from the impression-roller of the platepress, for throwing the clutch out of gear after each impression, the said shifting device comprising a spring-pressed shifting-1ever for the clutch, a spring-pressed trippinglever fulcrumed on the said shifting-lever, and a cam revolving in unison with the impression-roller and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the said tripping-lever, the said cam having an annular flange and a cam-face on the outer side thereof, as set forth.
6. A plate-press having a cam revolvingin unison with an impression-roller, a gearing for driving the impression-roller, a clutch for connecting and disconnecting the gearing and the driving-shaft, a spring-pressed shiftinglever operating the clutch, and a second names to this specification in the presence of spring-pressed looking-lever operating in a two subscribing Witnesses. plane at right angles to that of the shifting- ROBERT TURNER. lever and acted upon by said cam and means 5 for retaining the locking-lever in the plane of BENJAMIN OORLEY' the cam for a definite period, substantially as Witnesses: described.
