Description
No. 719,593. PATENTED FEB. a, 1903 H. HUBSGH. wmnow LOOK.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 1, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN HUBSCI-I, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WINDOW-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,593, dated February 3, 1903.
Application filed July 1, 1902- Serial No. 113,913- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN HUBSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window-locks, and has for its object to provide a device of the class described which will possess points of advantage in simplicity, convenience, inexpensiveness, effectiveness, and general efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device in which the locking means are normally entirely withdrawn from contact with the window-sash and there is required a positive operation to bring the locking device into action.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a window-lock embodying the invention, showing the adjacent parts of the window frame and sashes. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of such lock. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. at is a perspective view of a detail thereof.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window-frame; 2, sliding window-sashes,both of which may be of the ordinary construction.
My invention consists of a standard provided with means at its base for attaching it to the upper rail of the lower sash of a window and with a hooked upper portion, the front of said standard being inclined from the base to the recess formed by such hook, and a member adapted normally to rest in such hook portion and upon the front of the standard when in operative position. In the form here shown the base of the standard is provided with apertures 3 to receive screws at, by means of which it is secured upon the top of the upper rail of the lower sash 2 at one side of the window-frame 1. The rear surface of the standard 5 is substantially at right angles to the base and the upper portion curves from the back to the front, while the front is cut away to form a recess 6 near the top and is inclined outward from such recess toward the base.
The locking member consists of a spool 7 adapted to roll upon the front roughened or serrated surface of the standard 5 and is preferably provided on its ends with a resilient annular surface, against which the stile of the upper sash bears. Such resilient surface in the form shown consists of bands of rubber sprung upon the ends of the spool 7.
The operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated. The standard having been secured upon the upper rail of the lower sash, the locking member is rolled upon the inclined surface, and the upper sash bearing against the rubber-covered ends of the spool 7 causes the friction to be so great When the sashes are moved in opposite directions as to firmly lock them in a predetermined position. When it is desired to release the sash, it is only necessary to roll them slightly in the same direction, at the same time rolling the spool into the recess, where it remains out of the way until again needed.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I there fore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall Within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 61113- A device of the class described, comprising a member provided with means of attachment to the upper rail of the lower sash and with a transverse recess in its front portion near the top and with an outward-inclined front portion below such recess, and "a member provided with disk-shaped ends and an intermediate grooved portion which member normally rests in said recess and, when in operative position, rolls upon such inclined portion and bears against the stile of the upper sash.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN N I'IUBSCI-I.
