DERRICK ADAMS, or LANS-INGBURG, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 71,940, dated December 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
. Be it known that I, DERRICK ADAMS, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Toy-Carriage Horse and Driverpandl do hereby declare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view of said toy. The saiddrawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, make a part of this specification. i I
' The nature of my said invention consists in the combination and arrangement of certain mechanical devices, for the purpose of operating automatically a toy-carriage horse and driver, in manner substantially as hereinafter fully described.
To. enable others skilled in the art to make my improved toy-carriage with its horse and driver, I now proceed to fully describe its construction and operation.- i
The carriage-body, A A, is mounted upon four wheels.
cranked axle, B, so as to rotate with or turn the said axle when t floor or ground. Attached to each, or to its respective crank of the aforesaid axle, are the connecting-rods,
and G which extend forward of the carriage-body, and to the shafts or thills of which, F F, .is attached the figure of a horse, which is suspended or supported on or by said thills, so that its legs, E and D, do not touch The hindwheels are made fasten or to a double he toy-carriage is drawn or pushed over the the floor. The legs are attached to the body in such a manner by pins andf, and the upper ends respectively of said legs being attached to the aforesaid connecting-rods by pins a and g, in such a manner that when the cranks B rotate or turn to operate the said connecting-.rods,.a forward and backward movement or motion is communicated thereby to the said legs, thus imitating the walking or running of a horse. The other side of the horse or its legs are operated in the same way, but at alternating times with the side shown in the annexed drawing.
Upon the seat of the aforesaid ca upward through this figure is a spindle or shaft, G. To its upper or top cndis aflixcd the head ofsaid figure or driver. 'At the bottom or lower end of said shaft is ah'ixed a cross-bar or 'cross-head,'H. Each endzor arm of this cross-bar is attached by means of wires or cords, a and b, to the aforesaid connecting-rods or bars C and C, in such a manner that a vibrating or reciting motion is given to said cross-head by the alternate movements of the aforesaid connecting-rods, thus causing the aforesaid spindle or shaft, with its attached head or image of a driver, to alternately turn or move from right to left, and vice versa, the said spindle or shaft, being properly rriage is arrangedJand ailixed a figure or image of adrivo'r. Passing supported and guided by resting upon a shoulder or collars formed within said image. To the right side of the aforesaid figure of the driver is attached an arm, I, holding a whip. This arm is pivoted to the shoulder of the said figure by a pin, it, and bymeans of a cord or wire, a, it is connected with the axle B, or one of its cranks, I
in such a. manner, as shown, that the ro-tation'or revolution of said axle and crank causes said arm, with its whip, to alternately rise and fall, thus imitating'a driver in the act of whipping or starting up the horse. 7 Having thus described my invention and improvements, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv An automatic toy, having the legs of the horse and the head and arm of the driver actuated by mechanical devices, in manner substantially as herein described, and for the purposes as set forth.
DERRICK ADAMS.
