O.` B. NORTH, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO O. B. NORTH a co., 0F SAME PLAGE. Letters .Patent No. 71,901, dated December 10, 1867.`
IMPROVED BREAST-STRAP SLIDE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, O. B. NORTH, of New Haven, inthe countyof New Haven, and State of Connecticut,
` have invented a new Improvement in Breast-Strap Slides; and I do herebydeclare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part `of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, an edge view,
Figure 2 a top view, and in Figure 3 a central section. i
This invention is designed for the protection of ythe breast-strap in harnesses, and consists in the arrangement of a hinged tongue upon the concave side of the plate, so as to prevent the removal of the ring from the plate; also, the manner of forming the hook upon the plate. f f
To enable others to understand my improvement, will describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a concave-convex plate, its' edge turnedover so as to form a flange, B, for the protection of the strap G, and its two ends constructed so as to form'loops O C, through which the strap' passes. Thus for the plate is of common and well-known construction. Upon one side of the plate I form a xed projection, D, and upon the opposite side, upon a pivot, a, I hinge a tongue, E, its tail end, F, projecting through the plate, as seen in ig.r3, so that when the strap' is not hearing against the plate the tongue will naturally fall to the position in red, but when the strap is drawn hard up against the plate, then the tongue will be held up in the position in figs. 1 and 3, the tongue extending across and corresponding to a projection, D, on the opposite side of the plate, and thus, when up, covers the ring H, and prevents its removal from its proper projection. 4To place the ring in position, loose thestrap, as denoted in red, iig. 3; the tongue drops, and the ring' is placed in position; then the strap drawn up,`raises the tongue and covers thc ring. Iprefer to construct the tongue with the tail-piece FJ so that the strap will hold up the tongue, asvdescribed, yet a spring placed beneath the tongue will accomplish the saline object of supporting the tongue, but is more liable to get out of'repair than the use of the tail,
piece F; Breast-slides have before been constructed with tivo fixed projections, similar to the projection D, and in their manufacture the space between the projections and the plate has been formed by placing a core therein, a somewhat expensive process. To avoid this I form an opening, d, through the plate below the hook, so that the sand, .in moulding, will pass therethrough, and form its own core beneath the hook. By this process much expense is saved in the manufacture of this or other plates with similar projections.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. The arrangement of the hinged tongue E upon the plate A, so as to cover the ring, substantially inthe manner herein `4set forth.
2. Constructing the hook or projection D upon the inside of the plate, by forming an opening, d, through the plate, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
O. B. NORTH.
