Be it known that I, EDWARD S. STIMPsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of \V'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Infprovement in Thread-Parting Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing lilze parts.
This invention relates to automatic fillingreplenishing looms, and more particularly to looms of that type wherein means are provided for parting the old thread of filling i. 6., the thread of the filling-supply to be ejected upon filling replenishment-at points adjacent the shuttle and the edge of the cloth,
respectively, so that a loose end of filling will not be caught and woven into the cloth or be left hanging to interfere with the weaving in other ways.
It is customary to part the thread adjacent the shuttle by a thread-parter mounted on a swinging support (which frequently also serves as a shuttle-feeler) and to part the thread adjacent the edge of the cloth by a temple threadcutter,and in order to promptly bring the thread into the field of action thereof and also to dispose of the cut piece of thread a thread-holder is employed. Such thread-holder retains its hold upon the piece of thread until there is no danger of its be ing woven into the cloth, and various forms of thread holding devices have been employed.
My present invention has for its object the production of a novel thread-holder of the general type hereinbefore outlined.
Other objects and novel features of my invention will be described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the following claims.

The embodiment of my' invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 will first be described, as the lay A its bunter C the notched dog to cooperate therewith when the filling is replenished, said dog being carried by the rocking arm m the bracket A and the swinging arm or support Y, fulcrumed thereon at a and rearwardly extended at its upper end, as at Y, to form a shuttle-feeler, are all substantially as shown in United States Patent No. 677,096, granted June 25,1901, the swinging movement of the armYabout its fulcrum a from normal position (shown in Fig. 1) tooperative position, Fig. 3, being governed by or through the controlling means for the fillingreplenishing mechanism, of which controlling means the rock-shaft d formsa member. Said rock-shaft is operatively connected with the swinging arm Y by or through the arm d and pivoted jaw d, conjointly cooperating with the pin 30 on the arm Y. The rearwardlyturned extremity of the arm Y Y also constitu tes a shuttle-feeler, is notched, as at 3, Fig. 3, and provided with a fixed cutting-blade c, the arm having a lateral offset flattened p0rtion it to constitute a jaw, and a movable member or jaw h is pivotally mounted on the side of the arm Y onastud htorock thereon, said movable member having its rear end laterally offset, as at 72.2, and overhanging the flattened fixed jaw h.
The pivoted member h is provided at its outer end with a downturned heel 7L3 for a purpose to be described, and it is slotted at h, Fig. 3, a stop pin or projection 4 on the side of the arm Y extending into the slot and limiting the swinging movement of the member or jaw h A spring-detent 7L suitably secured to the arm Y, acts upon the end of the said jaw and maintains it by friction in open or closed position until positively moved therefrom. The top of the said jaw is provided with a shoulder h for a purpose to be described, and a movable blade 0 is secured to the said jaw to cooperate with the fixed blade 0 and part the filling-thread when the swinging arm is in the position shown in Fig. 3, it being understood that at such time the filling between the cloth and the shuttle will pass into the notch 3 and above the supporting-jaw h.
A presserp is mounted in a yielding manner on the jaw W, and, referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the presser is provided with an upturned shank p, which passes loosely through a counterbored hole hfin the lateral extension 71 a spring 3 surrounding the shank of the presser between the upper face of the latter and the bottom of the counterbore of the hole 7L and normally tending to force the presser away from the under side of the offset W. The shank is surrounded by a washer w interposed between the top of the offset and the head 19 of the shank.
The relative position of the jaws h and h when ready to engage the filling-thread is shown in Fig. 3, and when the latter heats up it engages a depending heel 7L and rocks the jaw h on its fulcrum to move the presserp toward the fixed jaw h, it being remembered that the thread is then between said parts, movement of the jaw h being limited by the stop-lug 4.
The spring 8 causes the acting face 19 of the presser to yieldingly bear upon the thread and hold it firmly upon the fixed jaw, yet by reason of the yielding mounting of the presser the thread is permitted to draw longitudinally beneath the presser when the arm Y returns to normal position, as at that time the distance between the edge of the cloth and the presser is somewhat greater than when the presser is in itsoperative position.
The presser and the cooperating threadsupporting face or part h constitute part of a thread-holder, which thread-holder is shown as mounted upon the swinging support Y Y, and the blades 0 c constituteathread-parter.
Inasmuch as the blade 0 and the presser are both mounted on the rocking member or jaw h the latter is a common member of the thread-holder and thread-partner.
The movement of the member if on its fulcrum to bring the presser into engagement with the thread also causes the latter to be parted by cooperation of the blades 0 c.
The under side of the presser is preferably recessed, as best shown in Fig. 4, and a block 19 preferably of non-metallic material--such as wood, leather, or other similar materialis firmly inserted therein, so that the thread is not subjected to the action of two metallic surfaces when the thread-holder is operated.
When the thread parter and holder have been operated by or through the rocking action of the jaw or member h as described, the arm Y returns to normal position after replenishment, and at that time the thread still retained by the thread-holder is drawn into the range of action of a cutter 0 secured to or forming part of a temple 2?, (see Fig. 2,) such a templeforming the subject-matter of United States Patent No. 585,465, dated June 29, 1895, to which reference may be had.
The temple-cutter parts the filling-thread adjacent the edge of the cloth, while the thread-parter c 0 parts it adjacent the shuttle, the thread-holder engaging the thread between points at which it is to be parted.
Referring to Fig. 1, wherein the swinging armY is shown in normal position, it will be seen that the thread-parter and thread-holder are in closed position, and manifestly it is necessary to open them in order that the thread may be acted upon thereby before the next operative positioning or bodily movement of the holder and parter into the position shown in Fig. 3. This is effected by means now to be described. The bracket A is provided with an upturned and rearwardlyextended rigid arm A having fulcrumed to it at a latch 61, the upper and opposite end of the latch 61 having a downturned tail 63, (see dotted lines, Fig. 3,) which plays between the stops 64 65 on the adjacent side of the arm A The lateral projection 62 over hangs the path of movement of the shoulder h on the jaw h. when the latter is moved bodily into or out of operative position by the swinging of the arm Y, and when the said arm moves from operative position to inoperative or normal position, such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the projection 62 drops behind the shoulder 71 (See Figs. 1 and 2.) Now when the next rearward swing of the arm Y takes place, when the filling is about to be replenished, the projection 62 acts upon the shoulder h and thereby turns the jaw h on its fulcrum h from the relative position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the swinging movement of the arm Y acting to disengage the projection and shoulder when such rocking of the jaw h has been coinpleted. The parts are then in condition to act upon the filling-thread at the proper time to part and hold the same, as has been hereinbefore described.
By yieldingly mounting the presser in addition to permitting slight longitudinal pull or draw of the thread when necessary I also effect an easier movement upon the thread, holding it firmly yet without any tendency to partit or by the closing of the holder thereupon.
The arm A is provided with a shelf 75, and upon this shelf is secured a loose-end-thread catcher 76, which is preferably a piece of rough-surfaced flannel, felt, or other similar material, the same acting to catch the loose end of the parted piece of thread and to hold the same when the subsequent opening of the holder releases it.
The presser is provided with an upturned lip or flange 19 which cooperates with the rear edge of the extension or overhanging part 77. of the pivotal jaw It to prevent the presser from twisting or turning out of posinon.
In its normal position the shuttle-feeler Y ,is so placed that when the lay beats up the shuttle-feeler will extend across the raceway at the mouth of the shuttle-box, provided the loom is running properly.
If the shuttle is improperly boxed at a time when the filling replenishing mechanism would otherwise operate, the shuttle-feeler prevents such operation in a well-known manner, the rearward swinging of the arm Y being prevented, so that the transferring of the replenishing mechanism cannot be operated.
When the loom is running,the shuttle sometimes will accidentally stop in thepath of the shuttle-feeler when the lay beats up, even though the shuttle-feeleris in its normal position, and at such time if there is no means provided for permitting a retrograde movement of the shuttle-feeler the parts carried thereby or the shuttle, or both, will be seriously injured. To obviate this injury to any of the parts, I have provided means to yieldingly stop or hold the shuttle-feeler in its normal position while permitting retrograde movement of the shuttle-feeler should it accidentally engage the shuttle at a time when filling replenishment is not to be effected.
The arm A is provided on its side nearest the shuttle-feeler with a tubular enlargement 80, (see dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3,) in which a headed plunger 81 is longitudinally slidable, the reduced shank 82 of the plunger being surrounded by a spring s interposed between the bottom of the. tubular chamber 80 and the under side of the plunger 81 to normally retain the latter in the position shown, a pin 83 preventing the spring from forcing the plunger out of place. The plunger is in the path of movement of an enlargement y on the outer edge of the arm Yand prevents any further outward swinging movement of the arm and shuttle-feeler under normal conditions. If, however, the shuttle stops in front of the shuttle-feeler and engages the same on the beat up of the lay, the shuttlefeeler will be moved toward the front of the loom, the plunger 81 at such time slidinginto the chamber 80 against the stress of the spring 5 This slight and yieldingly-controlled movement of the shuttle-feeler effectually prevents any injury to the parts referred to by such improper positioning of the shuttle.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 the thread-holder also comprises relatively movable members and a yieldinglysupported presser on one of said members to cooperate with the thread engaging or supporting face of the other member to hold the thread between the points at which it is to be parted, as hereinbefore set forth; but the details of construction are difierent and will be described. The loom side is provided with a bracket, having fulcrumed thereupon at 10 an upturned arm D, the upper end of said arm being rearwardly extended at D to form a shuttle-feeler, substantially as in Patent No. 677,097, granted June 25, 1901, the rockshaft d of the controlling means for the filling-replenishing mechanism being provided with an arm to cooperate with a pin 3 on the arm D and to control the swinging movement thereof, the notched dog and the parts between the dog and the swinging arm being omitted in Fig. 1, as they are of old and wellknown construction and may be substantially as in the patent just referred to. An extension 4 on the lower end of the arm D cooperates with a fixed stop a on the bracket A to limit the rearward movement of the shuttle-feeler, as shown in Fig. 5. The shuttlefeeler is longitudinally slotted 0r bifurcated to present two parallel portions (Z, which re ceive between them a sliding hooked blade on (shown separately in Fig. 8,) the same being longitudinally slotted at its rearmost extremity longitudinally, as at WL12, Fig. 6, to receive an upturned fixed blade m rigidly secured to the shuttle-feeler between the two parts (1 thereof, the hooked ends of the blade being shown at m, Figs. 7 and 8. The parts d of the sh uttle-feeler are notched at d to receive the thread between them when the device is in position to operate upon the fillingthread, and the sliding blade m is provided with a downturned heel m and a stop-lug m which abuts against a transverse shoulder d on the shuttle-feeler when the parts are in position to act upon the filling-thread. A spring 3 secured at one end to the arm D, acts at its free end upon the outer end of the blade m and normally retains it in the position shown in Fig. 7. That one of the parts (1 of the shuttle-feeler nearest the center of the loom is provided with a lateral extension d provided on its upper face with a bearing (1, in which is mounted the yieldingly-controlled presser q, the said presser, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5, having its shank (1 reduced in diameter at g and slidably mounted in the bearing, a spring 3 normally acting to maintain the presser extended in the position shown in Fig. 5. The sliding blade m of the thread-parter has a lateral extension m Fig. 5, to which is secured a jaw d rearwardly extended over the bearing cl and downturned at (i beyond the presser q, and
arranged to cooperate therewith to hold the thread, as will be described, the thread being held between the supporting portion 61 of the jaw and the presser q. When the lay beats up, supposing the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 5, the thread passes into the notch d of the shuttle-feeler, and as the lay completes its forward movement a part thereof will engage the depending heel M14 of the movable parting-blade m and will slide the latter rearwardly, so that the hooked ends m of the blade will engage the thread and draw it against the fixed blade m to be parted and at the same time the part (1 of the jaw d will be brought against the presser q, and the latter will be moved inwardly in its hearing as the blade m completes its sliding movement. At this time a latch n, pivoted at 'lt' on the arm D, will by means of a shoulder n, Fig. 5, engage the extension m and retain the blade retracted and with the presser and part d of the jaw 01 in contact with the thread between them. A spring 3 Fig. 5, is shown as interposed between the depending end of the latch n, and an abutment 61 on the arm D insures the proper operation of the latch. After the filling replenishment has been effected the arm D swings toward the front of the loom, the arm 61 at such time swinging downward, and the shuttle-feeler will return to its normal position. The latch 'n is provided with a cam-shelf n extended from the side thereof, and by means of a tripping device cooperating with the cam-shelf the latch is disengaged from the part M of the blade m on the next rearward movement of the arm D from normal position.
Referring to Fig. 5, a J-shaped arm F is fulcrumed on the pivot 10 and is held in the position shown in Fig. 5 by a spring 5 secured at one end to a pin 33 on the bracket A and at its other end to a hook f at the lower part of the arm F. The upper end of the arm is rearwardly extended at f and provided with a lateral shelf f, to which is secured a loose-end thread-catcher f Fig. 5, such as hereinbefore referred to, and a releasing-dog f is fulcru med at f on the upper end of the arm F, said releasing-dog having at its rear end a cam-lug f which is in the path of movement of the cam-shelf n Referring to Fig. 5, when the arm D swings toward the front of the loom the cam-shelf n passes under the lug f and lifts the dogf until the cam-shelf has passed beyond it. The dog then returns to the position shown in Fig. 5, the cam-lug f resting on the top of the partf. At the next rearward movement of the arm D, however, the cam-shelf n will be forced to ride up over the upper face of the cam-lug f and thereby the latch n will be turned on its pivot to lift the shelf n from engagement with the part m and thereupon the spring 3 will immediately slide the blade m outward and into the position shown in Figs. 5 to 7, so that the parts will be ready to act upon the filling-thread, as has been described. When the arm D is in its normal position, a pin 34: thereon will engage the upturned arm F, assuming the dotted-line position, Fig. 5, so that the arm also serves as a stop to limit the outward movement of the shuttle-feeler arm D Should the shuttle by improper positioning on the lay meet the shuttle-feeler on the beat up of the lay, it would swing the shuttle-feeler forward on its fulcrum 10, and this will be permitted because the pin 34 will press against the arm F, rocking it on the fulcrum 10 and stretching the spring 8 so that a smash or injury to the parts is prevented.
It is to be understood that the thread-parting and threadholding means shown in Figs. 5 to 7 are to be used in connection with a thread-cutting temple,substantially as shown in Fig. 2, and that the operation of the thread-..
holder is such that the thread after being parted adjacent the shuttle will be drawn into the range of action of the cutter on the temple, and the yieldingly-mounted presser in the modified form shown and described.
permits the thread to draw through longitudinally as necessary.
The presser q is preferably made rectangu lar to slide upon the upper face of the part (1 so as to'prevent rotative movement of the presser.
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement herein shown and described, as the same may be modified in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, means operative upon change of filling to part the filling adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, controlling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a holder for the cut piece of filling, movable by or through the operation of the controlling means into position to engage the filling between the parting means, said holder including two jaws, and a spring-controlled presser mounted on one, and havingits face opposed to the acting face of the other, of said jaws, means to open the jaws when the holder is moved into operative position, and independent means to close the jaws and bring the presser to bear upon the filling-thread.
2. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, means operative upon change of filling to part the filling adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, controlling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a holder for the cut piece of filling, movable by or through the operation of the controlling means into position to engage the filling between the parting means, said holder including two relatively movable jaws, a springcontrolled presser mounted on one jaw, to cooperate with the other jaw and hold the thread thereupon, and a device to lock the jaws together, means to close the jaws after operative positioning of the holder, and means to render the locking device inoperative and effect opening of the jaws upon the next succeeding bodily movement of the holder into operative position.
3. In aloom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, the lay, a swinging support,a filling-parter and a filling-holder mounted thereon, means operative upon change of filling to swing the support and bring the parter and holder into position to engage the filling between the shuttle and the cloth, the parter including blades operated by or through the lay, the holder including two jaws one of which is movable relatively to the other, a spring-controlled pressermounted on one jaw, to cooperate with the other jaw and yieldingly press the thread thereagainst, a spring to maintain the jaws open, a device actuated by the lay to close them, and means to effect the opening of the jaws and release of the cut piece of filling by the presser as the holder is moved into operative position.
t. In a loom provided with mechanism for automatically replenishing the filling, means operative upon change of filling to part the thread of the old supply of filling, adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, controlling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a thread holder movable by or through the operation of such means to engage the thread between the points at which it is to be parted, the holder including two members one of which is movable relatively to the other, one of said members having a smooth thread-engaging face, a spring-controlled presser on the other member, said presser having a broad, fiat face to cooperate with the said thread-engaging face, and a device to retain said members closed with the presser-face in yielding engagement with the face of the opposite member of the holder, means to close said members, and independent means to open them upon the movement of the holder into operative position is completed.
5. In a loom provided with mechanism for automatically replenishing the filling, means operative upon change of filling to part the thread of the old supply of filling, adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, controlling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a thread holder movable by or through the operation of such means to engage the thread between the points at which it is to be parted, the holder including two jaws one of which is movable relatively to the other, a thread-engaging face on one, and a bearing on the other jaw, a presser havinga shank slidably mounted in said bearing, and a spring to extend the presser, means to close the jaws and thereby effect yielding engagement between the thread-engaging face and the presser, and independent means to open the jaws as the holder is moved bodily into operative position.
6. In a loom, provided with mechanism for automatically replenishing the filling, inde pendently operating devices to part the thread of the old supply of filling adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, controlling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a thread-holder bodily movable with one of the parting devices, through the operation of the controlling means, into position to engage the thread between the parting devices, the holder including a thread-supporting member, an opposed presser, and a spring to yieldingly hold the presser against said member and hold the thread after it has been parted adjacent the shuttle, return of the holder to normal position presenting the soheld end of thread to the action of the other parter. v
7. In a loom, provided with mechanism for automatically replenishing the filling, independently-operating devices to part the thread of the old supply of filling adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, oontrolling means for the replenishing mechanism, and a thread-holder bodily movable with one of the parting devices, through the operation of the controlling means, into position to engage the thread between the parting de- Vices, the holder including a thread-supporting member, an opposed presser, and a spring to yieldingly hold the presser against said member and hold the thread after it has been parted adjacent the shuttle, return of the holder to normal position presenting the soheld end of thread to the action of the other parter, and means to positively effect separation of the presser and the thread-supporting member prior to the next operative positioning of the holder.
8. A thread-holder for automatic filling-replenishing looms, consisting of a swinging support having a fixed jaw having a fiat face to sustain the thread, a pivot-ally-mounted overhanging jaw, a presser mounted on the latter below its under face, and means to yieldingly connect the presser and jaw.
9. A thread-holder for automatic filling-replenishing looms, consisting of a swinging support having a fixed, laterally-offset, fiat jaw, a pivotally-mounted jaw having a lateral offset overhanging the fixed jaw, a presser having an upturned shank slidably mounted in said offset, the presser being below the same, and a spring interposed between the offset and presser, to control the movement of the latter relatively to the offset.
10. A thread-holder for automatic fillingreplenishing looms, consisting of a swinging support having a fixed, laterally-otfset, fiat jaw, a pivotally-mounted jaw having a lateral offset overhanging the fixed jaw, a presser having a non-metallic face, and means to yieldingly connect the presser and the ofiset, the presser being located below said offset to cooperate with the fixed jaw.
11. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, controlling means therefor, a thread-cutting temple at the same side of the loom, a shuttle adapted to carry a supply of filling, a thread-holder and a thread- IIO parter movable upon change of filling into position to act upon the thread of the fillingcarrier to be ejected, said holder including a yieldingly-acting presser to engage the thread, an actuator for the thread-parter and thread-holder, the return of the latter to normal position bringing the filling end into position to be parted by the temple-cutter.
12. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, controlling means therefor, a shuttle adapted to carry a supply of filling, a swinging support, a thread-parter and a thread-holder mounted thereupon and bodily movable by the operation of the controlling means into position to act upon the thread of the filling-supply to be ejected, means to actuate the parter and holder, means to place the parter and holder in condition to act upon the thread as the swinging support is moved into operative position, and yielding means to retain said support in normal position and permit retrograde movement thereof if accidentally engaged by the shuttle on the forward beat of the lay.
13. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, controlling means therefor, a shuttle adapted to carry a supply of filling, a swinging support, a thread-parter and a thread-holder mounted thereupon and bodily movable by the operation of the controlling means into position to act upon the mal position, said stop permitting slight movement of the support if accidentally engaged by the shuttle in improper position as the lay heats up.
14. In a loom provided with filling-replenishing mechanism, controlling means therefor, a shuttle adapted to carry a supply of filling, means to part the thread of the fillingsupply to be ejected, adjacent the cloth and the shuttle, respectively, a thread-holder bodily movable by the operation of the controlling meansinto position to act upon the thread between the points at which it is to be parted, means to actuate the thread-holder when operatively positioned, and a loose end catcher having a roughened surface, to catch the loose end of the parted piece of thread engaged by the thread-holder.
