NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGEW."WAREIIAM, PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
NIATTRESSFFILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,955, dated January 6, 1903. Application led July 19, 1902. Serial No. 116,215. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WAREHAM, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress? Fillers; and I do hereby declare the following tobeafull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art"to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mattress-fi1lers.
The invention has for its object the production of a simple and efficient mattress-filler which may be regulated to fill mattresses of diiferent widths. y
lA further object is to provide an improved feed-roller and end gate which can be readily adjusted to the various widths of the mattress-filler, and thus avoid the substitution of new parts after each adjustment.
A further object is to provide tick-guides which may be adjusted for mattresses of varying thicknesses. y
In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable frame or support on which are mounted two removing-sheets the edges of which overlap, suitable means being provided for varying the relative positions of said removing-sheets. At the forward end of the machine is pivotally mounted an end gate made up of two telescoping sections, the relative positions of which are regulated simultaneously with the regulation of the varying positions of said removing-sheets. The sections of said end gate are mounted in bearing-bars pivotally supported by the side bars of the frame, said bearing-bars also serving to sup port the shaft of a feed-roll when the latter is in its operative position. VSaid feed-roll-is also formed of telescoping members, whereby said roll maybe adjusted to conform to the relative positions of the removingsheets.
The tick-guides are secured to the side bars and are each formed of two sections, 4means being `provided for adjusting said sections vertically to conform to ticks of differentthicknesses, i
The `invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the` a transverse section of my improved mattress-filler. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation illustrating the feed-roll and its adjuncts. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the end gate and tick-guides, respectively. Fig. 5 is a detail illustrating the device for effecting the adjustment of the removing-sheets.
Referring to the drawings, designates a frame or support in which are mounted the sliding removing-sheets 11 12,the formeroverlapping the latter, as indicated at 13. The removing-sheet l1 is moved back and forth by means of a sprocket-chain 14 passing over wheels 15 and connected to a bar 16, which is arranged to automatically engage and be disengaged from the side bar 17 of said removin g-sheet by means of an angle-plate a, having a perforation arranged to receive a pin or lug b carried by the end bar c of said removingsheet. In practice the relative positions of theremoving-sheets are regulated by means of the chain 14 to suit the dierent widths of ticks to be filled.
In the forward ends of the side bars of the frame 10 are pivotally mounted bearing-bars 18, said bearing-bars being provided at their forward ends with inwardly-extended studs or pins 19, arrangedto enter the tubular portions 20 of an end gate 21, whereby the latter is pivotally supported. Said end gate is formed of two telescoping members 22 23, the former being stationary and the latter adjustable simultaneously with the side bar 17. The bearing-bars 18 are raised and lowered by means of hand-levers 24, keyed to the laps section at one end, the other end there` of being secured to a spider 38, having a key or spline 39, fitting in a keyway or groove 40, whereby said section may be moved back and forth. On each end of shaft 34 are keyed sprocket-wheels 4l, connected by chains 42 IOO with wheels 43, keyed to the pivot or rock shaft 44 of bearing-bars 35. Sprocket 45 is also keyed to shaft 44 and connected by a chain 46 to a sprocket 47, keyed to a short shaft 48, mounted in the frame or support lO. Said shaft is rotated by means of a pinion 49, meshing with a corresponding pinion 50, keyed on one end of shaft 5l. Said shaft is rotated by means of sprockets 52, which are engaged by chains 53, operated from any suitable source of power. Said chains 53 engage and feed the removing-sheets forward into the tick and withdraw the same after said tick is filled. The feed-roll is moved into and out of operative position byfmeans of a lever d, pivoted to the frame 10 and having an arm or pitman engaging one of the bearing-bars 35.
The tick-guides are each made of a lower stationary section 54 and an upper adjustable section 55. The latter is provided with a block or extension 56, having a threaded hole or opening arranged to receive a threaded adjusting-shaft 57, the lower end of which is loosely mounted in a block 58, carried by the side bars. The block 56 is provided with a depending rod or guide 59, arranged to slide in a hole or opening 60 in block 58.
In practice when it is desired to fill a tick the desired width is obtained by the adjustment of the removing-sheets through the medium of chain 14. It will be particularly noted in this connection that the adjustment of the removing-sheets just referred to will simultaneously effect a corresponding adjustment of the sections of the feed-roll and the end gate and also of the relative position of the tick-guides. The members of the tickguides are .then adjusted relatively to each other to accommodate the desired thickness of the mattress to be made. The filling material is then distributed on the removingsheets, after which the end gate is raised and the feed-roller moved to its operative position. The chains 53 are then started in operation, feeding the removing-sheets into the tick, which is supported by the tick-guides, the feed-roll being rotated simultaneously therewith and effecting an even feed of the filling material.
The advantages of my improved mattressfiller will be at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be particularly observed that the removingsheets, feed-roll, and end gate are readily capable of simultaneous and conjoint adjustment to fit mattresses of different widths and that by means of my adjustable tick-guidesmattresses of different thicknesses may be lled, all of said adjustments being readily accomplished with but a minimum expenditure of time and labor.
