SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,095,.dated December 30, 1902.
Application iiled July 26,1901. Serial No. 69,863. (No model.)
To all wtom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. I-IARDISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Paula, in the county of Ventura and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Drilling Devices for Drilling W'ells, of which the following is a specification.
My invention particularly relates to means to drill oil-wells; but it is adapted to drill any kind of a well, and my improvement relates to that part of a drilling-rig which lies between the well and the engine-pulley.
It is of the object of my invention to provide a simple, compact, and reliable device to drill wells that is easily operated and eas ily moved fromvone place to another without the loss of much time and at little expense and which requires but little power to operate. I accomplish these and other objects hereinafter particularly pointed out by means of the apparatus hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-,

My drilling-rig is described as follows, taken in combination with the accompanying drawings.
A is a band-wheel which receives the power from the engine by means of a belt or band and transmits it to the other parts of the machine hereinafter described.
B is a tug-pulley keyed to the shaft X. It drives bull-wheel J by means of a chain belt K. Cranks C C are connected by means of pitman D.
IV is the cable or rope.
Drum G is the spudding or drilling drum.
H is the brake-wheel.
I is the brake-band.
J is the bull-wheel.
L is a worm-gear.
M is a screw which works the worm-gear and has crank P.
N is the yoke that shifts the worm-gear, and it is operated by shipper Q. This yoke slides on shaft E, a portion thereof, E', being made square to let it slip back and forth far enough to throw bevel-gear J', Fig. 3, in and ont of engagement with gear H".
O is a lever that works the shippers Q and R.
S is a lever that connects with brake-band I. (Connection not shown.)
T is the lever that is connected to sandreels U and Y by means of a pitman or reach.
E is a combination shaft on which are mounted crank C, cable-rope drum F, spudding-drum G, brake-wheel II, Worm-wheel L, yoke N, hollow shaft b, bevel-gear H and H", which is a double-faced gear, and collars El and E'".
- Bull-wheel J, having an internal gear J', is fitted to revolve on hollow shaft b and is held in place by shipper R and lever O. The hollow shaft b is fitted to revolve on shaft E, and on one end carries beveled gear b and on the other end carries the worm-wheel L. Yoke N is fitted to shaft E by means of featherkeys, or, squaring the shaft, it is yoked over worm gear-wheel L, with the screw M fitted in the top part to work worm-wheel L, as shown. Wfhen yoke N is moved back and forth on the shaft E,it also moves hollow shaft b and bevel-gear b', throwing it in and out of It is operated by shipwill loosen brake-band I and release the ca ble-drum F and let it revolve freely on shaft E. The drilling-tools will then be lowered into the well. The cable W is then put on the spudding or drilling drum G, and lever O is then thrown to the right, which will move the gear Z2' into contact with gear I-I" and connect drums F and G to shaft E. Throw ed brake-band, and as drums F and G are now connected to shaft E by means of yoke N and worm L and screw M (the shaft being connected to band-wheel shaft X by cranks C C and pitman D) and when the power is applied it will cause crank C on shaft X to revolve and crank C on shaft E to swing back and forth, thereby giving drums H, F, and G the same motion, which will cause the tools to rise and fall in the well. As the drill goes down the tension is let out with worm M. To draw the tools from the well, throw the lever O to the left until bevel-gear J engages gear H and gear b is freed from gear IOO HW, when cable W is wound upon drum Gr to draw the tools out of the hole. The sandreels U and Y are the usual friction-reel used on drilling-rigs. The sand-pump line Z runs from this shaft over a pulley in top of derrick. This line is shown in the drawings tied to the top of the derrick.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, andl desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a well-drilling machine, the combination with the tool-operating shaft, the same having the usual operating means; a duplex rope-engaging drum revolubly mounted upon the shaft; and provided at one end with internal and external bevel-gears, and a bandengaging channel on its outer circumference; a sleeve longitudinally movable on said shaft, and provided at one end with external beveled gear, adapted to engage, at one extreme of its longitudinal movement, with the interual gear on the drum, and having at the other end a worm-gear; a bull-wheel, revolubly mounted on the sleeve; the sleeve having a longitudinal movement therein; the bull-wheel'having an internal beveled gear, adapted, at one end of stroke, to engage the external beveled gear on the drum, and means, substantially as shown, to throw the said gear in and out of engagement, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved spudding device for welldrilling machines, comprising a revoluble shaft, having operative means, shown; a ropewinding drum revoluble thereon; a hollow shaft revoluble on said shaft, having a longitudinal movement thereon; a bull-Wheel revolubly mounted on said hollow shaft and having a longitudinal movement on said shaft; external beveled gear on said drum, adapted to mesh with bevel-gear on the bullllongitudinal movement to the hollow shaft and the bull-wheel.
3. The herein-described means to operate the tools in spudding, comprising a main operating-shaft, provided at one end with a' crank for imparting a reciprocating motion thereto;'a connecting-rod pivoted to the free end of said crank, and connected with a crank on a counter-shaft, through which the motive power is transmitted; the other end of the main shaft having a square end to engage, a square opening in a yoke; a yoke non-rotatively mounted on the square end of said shaft and having a longitudinal movement thereon; means to impart a longitudinal movement to said yoke; a rope-engaging drum; a bull-wheel and a hollow shaft revolubly mounted on said main shaft, the hollow shaft having beveled gear at one end and a worm-gear at the other end, as shown, and means to throw the same into and out of engagement; a worm revolubly mounted in said yoke and meshing with said worm-gear, and means to rotate said worm.
